Refinements in husbandry, care and common procedures for non-human primates: Ninth report of the BVAAWF/FRAME/RSPCA/UFAW Joint Working Group on Refinement

Should we do cardiac screens routinely?
In most cases, we can't alter the clinical outcome with early detection. However, we can make owners more aware of the disease status of their pet, and be more vigilant in observing clinical signs.

Splenosis
So, with the obvious history of trauma, I wonder if it could be related to the findings in her abdomen--multiple dark red/brown small nodules of irregular shape, kind of "squishy" in texture--looked for all the world like misplaced bits of spleen.

Lymphocytosis: Do we treat the bloodwork or the patient?
Imagine an owner who wanders in, buys wormer from you, and a month or so later the dog is diagnosed with a medical condition that now requires expensive treatment. A creative plaintiff's attorney would be quick to point out that a valid V/C/P relationship based on a medical exam should have led to detection and early treatment.

Surgical reconstruction after dog's nose bitten off
You can suture the skin to the end of the exposed bone. Often you don't need to worry about the nasal passages. The alternative is to put in polypropylene tubing and allow epithelialization to occur around the tubing. Bear in mind these can become occluded and will need to be cleaned.
