Handbook of Behavior Problems of the Dog and Cat, 2nd Edition
List Price: $69.95 VIN Member Price: $62.96
Authors: Gary Landsberg, DVM, BSc; Wayne Hunthausen, DVM; Lowell Ackerman, DVM

This best-selling, practical book on behavior therapy offers easily-accessible information in a user-friendly approach. With this essential handbook, veterinarians don't need to be behavior specialists to provide optimum care for clients with behavior problems. The 2nd edition provides at-a-glance solutions to common behavior problems, offering updated information on preventive and basic counseling advice, as well as new material on the link between genetics and behavior. All treatment protocols have been drawn from and text and compiled into a convenient appendix in the back of the book. Staff responsibilities and the team approach to behavior counseling are also discussed. Find it in the VINstore.

VP - Clients & Medications
VIN's VeterinaryPartner (VP) has a Drug section that features detailed information on commonly prescribed pet medications. The interested owner can learn how a medication works within the body, how the medication represents an improvement over previously used treatments, and what side effects to be aware of. Understanding a medication and why it was prescribed can help a pet owner understand the goals of therapy as well as possible pitfalls. You and your clients can check out the Drug section at: www.VeterinaryPartner.com

...New on VeterinaryPartner.com:

The use of dextromethorphan to treat repetitive self-directed scratching, biting, or chewing in dogs with allergic dermatitis
Dextromethorphan significantly reduces the percentage of time that allergic dogs spend self-licking, self-chewing, and self-biting.

Intercostal thoracotomy closure: transcostal sutures as a less painful alternative to circumcostal suture placement
Based on lower pain scores, transcostal thoracotomy closure may be preferable to circumcostal closure techniques.

Questions About Enucleation Technique
I routinely remove the lids first to get them out of the way in cats. You are correct, you must remove the lacrimal caruncle and the medial canthus. You can then do the subconjunctival ablation and resection of the extraocular muscles and finally resect the retrobulbar muscles and optic nerve.

Other Doc In Town Refuses To Take Her Clients' Emergencies
Last year, more than 75% of the non-established client emergencies were this other vet's. I do want a bit of a life of my own and I'd rather just see my clients as a service to them. The problem is that sometimes these clients still call me and I have a real case of the guilts as these people are desperate to get some help for their pets.
