Moxidectin toxicosis in a puppy successfully treated with intravenous lipids
The unique feature of this case is the IV use of a lipid emulsion for moxidectin intoxication, which appeared to dramatically abbreviate the course of recovery. We utilized an emulsion of 20% soybean oil in water that is frequently used as the fat component of parenteral nutrition. Its use in the treatment of moxidectin toxicity has not been described previously.
Characteristics and outcomes in surgical management of severe acute pancreatitis: 37 dogs (2001–2007)
Surgical intervention and aggressive postoperative care may be pursued in select dogs with severe acute pancreatitis. In dogs with extrahepatic biliary obstruction secondary to acute pancreatitis, surgical intervention may be associated with a good prognosis, whereas dogs with pancreatic abscess formation may have a more guarded prognosis.
Fat diet reduces stress and intensity of startle reaction in horses
Our results demonstrate that the increment of fat proportion in the diet reduces the level of stress at resting and the intensity of response to startling stimuli, as denoted both in physiological parameters and in behavioural variables.

What is going on in this cat's abdomen?
There is free air and lots of free fluid. That equates to surgical emergency to me. Most likely culprit is perforated bowel and peritonitis. Sometimes seeing free air can be difficult. What gives it away is there is very poor serosal detail along the colon (red arrow). I can see feces, but not the outer wall. There are also areas where serosal detail is too good (white arrow), where the bowel is sticking out of the fluid and into the gas.
Setting up my new koi pond
As a vet, this is a perfect opportunity to do diagnostic skin scrapes and gill biopsies on your fish to check for parasites and treat per results. To reduce overall stress, add non-iodized salt. Aim for 0.1-0.2% for first few weeks. Higher if parasites are found.
Dental procedures: tips on scheduling and giving estimates
Dental procedures: tips on scheduling and giving estimates. I totally agree with the "Pandora's Box" analogy and use that all the time to explain to owners why we can't give a blanket estimate without knowing more information.
A technician is doing surgery in the practice I just bought in California and the previous owner misrepresented the practice. What do I do?
Her illegal activity was encouraged by the previous owner, so would that be OK to use as grounds for firing her? I don't want to start my new practice off with a labor lawsuit. Would she have any grounds to sue?

Funny Bones: Clinic cat gobbles up tumor "Since Hurricane Katrina my house cats live in the hospital. There are a bunch of them, a whole bunch of them. The other day we were removing a skin mass from a dog. The sample fell off the drape during the procedure. One of the many clinic cats darted into surgery and ate it. He vomited about an hour later."
