Drug Interaction Warning
Dogs receiving the drug Comfortis (spinosad) concurrently with high, extra-label doses of ivermectin are having adverse reactions in some cases, the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) announced.

Read the bulletin and share your thoughts/experiences with your fellow VINners.

Calcium: total or ionized?
Measurement of serum total calcium (tCa) has been relied on for assessment of calcium status, despite the fact that it is the ionized calcium (iCa) fraction that has biologic activity. Serum tCa does not accurately predict iCa status in many clinical conditions. For accurate assessment of iCa status, iCa should be directly measured.

Use of a gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist implant as an alternative for surgical castration in male ferrets (Mustela putorius furo)
Plasma FSH and testosterone concentrations, testis size, and spermatogenesis were all suppressed after the use of the deslorelin implant. These results indicate that the deslorelin implant effectively prevents reproduction and the musky odor of intact male ferrets and is therefore considered a suitable alternative for surgical castration in these animals.

DNA vaccines and their applications in veterinary practice: current perspectives
This review highlights the salient features of DNA vaccines, and measures to enhance their efficacy so as to devise an effective and novel vaccination strategy against animal diseases.

Wound flushing methods
I guess I just feel better, after all these years for having washed some of the HBC and other extremely dirty dogs in the tub before pursuing more definitive efforts. Based on my experiences, I have no trouble believing the data obtained.

Terminal patients have a right to know
It doesn't surprise me that things haven't changed. I went with my father to all his consultations since I speak medicalese, even if it is with an animal accent.;-) We saw young and old, GP and specialist, local and university doctors and they all were unwilling to discuss end-of-life care with my father.

Hand raising a pot-belly pig: when to wean, recommended feeds, and amounts to feed
My client has a 3 week old piglet she is hand rearing. When should the piglet be weaned and solid foods introduced? How much should be fed? What is the best food to offer?

Salmonella cultured from kittens in a cattery; managing Salmonellosis in cats being fed a raw diet
All the Salmonella outbreaks I've seen in cats have been associated with raw food diets. The kittens should not go to new homes until they are culture negative at least twice. The breeder does not want to give Salmonella to unsuspecting new kitten owners.
