Reminder! VIN is a world-wide community. When posting your cases, try to keep acronyms and abbreviations to a minimum -- or at least use the full phrase once, to make it easier for other VINners to understand. If you run across an acronym you don't recognize, check out VIN's Abbreviations page. Newly-Added to the OSHA Center

Bacterial Translocation
Because bacterial translocation (BT) is associated with ischemia/reperfusion, it is important to rapidly resuscitate patients to restore tissue perfusion. Nutrition, along with prokinetic drugs, protectants, and antioxidants, has shown benefit in preventing BT and its life-threatening effects.
Common Virus Infections in Cats, Before and After Being Placed in Shelters, with Emphasis on Feline Enteric Coronavirus
Although shelters were not the primary source of these viruses for many relinquished cats, factors intrinsic to the shelter environment were critical in amplifying shedding and spread to susceptible individuals.
Occult Urinary Cystitis in Diabetic Dogs
Since diabetic dogs often have occult urinary tract infections, the urine on all diabetic dogs should be cultured for bacteria.
At-Home Measurement of Capillary Blood Glucose Concentrations
Measurement of capillary blood glucose concentrations from the ears of diabetic cats and dogs by owners may be beneficial in diabetic management, but careful owner instructions are essential for success.

Regurgitating Blue and Gold
I almost never take more than one contrast shot at 30-40 minutes. That usually gets a good pictures of most of the GI tract. If I am interested in lower GI and cloaca, I might wait another 15-20 minutes. If I am concerned about the crop and esophagus, I might take it at 15 minutes and a trach tube is mandatory. I use a plexiglas board with no positioning aids on the board. Just place the bird on the board and secure with masking tape.
Was Exploratory Surgery Indicated?
If you don't do any negative exploratories, then you don't do enough exploratories.
What's a Normal Cancellation Requirement in a Relief Vet's Contract?
My long term relief DVM just gave me a new contract with a 180 day cancellation notice. In other words, I have to pay her if I cancel dates with less than a 6 month notice. Is it just me, or is this unreasonable? What IS reasonable?
Soft Enamel in Young Italian Greyhound: How to Save Teeth?
