Participate in Clinical Trials
Between the demands of practice and personal life, your precious free time (if you have any) is probably limited. Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office?

Simply visit the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page to find a study recruiting patients. Be a part of the solution. Help lead the way in answering questions that matter.

If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.

20 Years of IVECCS
Don't miss the 14th International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium, September 18-21, at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix, Arizona.

This year's theme is "Imaging for Emergency & Critical Care," which will emphasize the latest in technology and practical application to optimize clinical patient care. The symposium's 20th anniversary will also feature a special lecture series called "Then and Now," chronicling the evolution of key facets of emergency & critical care practice. Early bird registration ends August 12.

Just the FAQs
The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because many topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of "hits" you get can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN team of consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards. Save time -- check out the Medical FAQs, before you post.

All creatures great and minute: a public policy primer for companion animal zoonoses
This study is intended to serve as a primer for animal care professionals seeking to engage with policy makers and the pet industry on the prevention of companion animal zoonoses. We provide background on the human-animal bond, risks of zoonoses associated with groups of companion animals, and the public policy context, as well as identify the factors needed to build a comprehensive approach to companion animal zoonoses risk management.

Congenital heart disease in boxer dogs: Results of 6 years of breed screening
The aim of this study was to analyse the results of 6 years (1999-2004) of mandatory breed screening for congenital heart disease in Boxer dogs using physical examination and echocardiography. Records of 1283 Boxers were reviewed and 165 dogs (12.86%) were found to be affected by heart disease, with aortic and pulmonic stenosis being the most frequent cardiac lesions. A male predisposition for both aortic and pulmonic stenosis was evident from the study.

Juvenile dogs as potential sentinels for west nile virus surveillance
Seroconversion was detected 6 weeks before the first reported human case. Our findings provide evidence that dogs could be useful sentinels for monitoring areas for evidence of WNV during transmission seasons.

Pancreatitis analgesia
If he's still intensely painful, I think a combined opioid/ketamine/lidocaine infusion is merited. Ketamine obviously provides NMDA receptor antagonism (reducing central sensitization), but it also appears to enhance opioid receptor sensitivity and reduce the propensity for opioid-induced rebound hyperalgesia. Lidocaine has some degree of direct analgesic action, but more importantly acts as another anti-hyperalgesic. It may also exert a cytoprotective effect (minimizing the likelihood of DIC/SIRS developing), and at least in horses and humans (and we hope dogs) provides an anti-ileus effect.

New FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) test can distinguish between disease and vaccination
Winn's Cat Health News blog reports this week on a new FIV test that can discriminate antibodies due to natural infection from those induced by vaccination.

Economics of dental radiographs: how this will make us money
I did some back-of-the-envelope math and, based on my numbers, we would make an extra $47,000 per year.
