American Heartworm Society Resource Library is GROWING!
The American Heartworm Society (AHS) is at the center of advances in our understanding of Heartworm Disease. The Proceedings of their Symposium are peer reviewed and authored by leading experts in the field. Until recently, they have been available only in print to a very limited audience. Thanks to Dr. Tom Nelson (President of the AHS) and the Board of Directors of the AHS, and the VIN Foundation, we are making the print documents available to AHS and VIN members online. Today we announce the release of the 2001 AHS Symposium in the AHS Resource Library on VIN.
Calcitriol Availability
Some veterinarians are finding it difficult to obtain calcitriol that has been appropriately formulated for use in dogs and cats. However, Larry Nagode, DVM and Dennis Chew, DVM have generously provided VIN with information for obtaining Calcitriol. This complements the other medical FAQs on Calcitriol use in the Medical FAQ Library.
Blood Administration Guidelines
The information contained in the Animal Blood Bank's Blood Administration Guidelines is a compilation of works from the past several years developed by many sources. These are general guidelines. Transfusion protocols should include calculations of volume deficits, administration of other fluid volumes, general fluid loss over time, and other parameters that can affect the animal's recovery. Canine Mammary Tumors (A VCS/VCOG Clinical Investigation) This investigation will attempt to determine in a large number of dogs what the median time is from the diagnosis of a first mammary gland tumor to the development of a subsequent mammary gland tumor. Serum concentrations and analgesic effects of liposome-encapsulated and standard butorphanol tartrate in parrots
SC administration of liposome-encapsulated butorphanol tartrate (LEBT) provided analgesia and detectable serum butorphanol concentrations in Hispaniolan parrots for up to 5 days. The use of LEBT may allow for substantial improvement in long-term pain relief without subjecting birds to the stress of handling and multiple daily injections.
Characterization of antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella Newport isolated from animals, the environment, and animal food products in Canada
Before 2000, none of 49 S. Newport strains was resistant to more than 3 antimicrobials. In contrast, between January 2000 and December 2002, 35 of 70 isolates, primarily of bovine origin, were resistant to at least 11 antimicrobials, including the extended-spectrum cephalosporins.
The synergistic effects of pentoxifylline on systemic and regional perfusion after hemorrhage and hypertonic resuscitation
Pentoxifylline as an adjunct drug during hypertonic resuscitation improves cardiovascular performance and gastric mucosal oxygenation.
Urodynamic and morphologic changes in the lower portion of the urogenital tract after administration of estriol alone and in combination with phenylpropanolamine in sexually intact and spayed female dogs
Vaginal length and width were significantly shorter in spayed dogs. Estriol treatment significantly increased maximum urethral pressure, closure pressure, and integrated pressure values at day 7, but at day 14, this effect decreased despite phenylpropanolamine administration.

Painful, Stinky Mouth In Dog: Could This Be Chronic Ulcerative Proliferative Stomatitis?
Oravet electrostatoically bonds to the teeth. My understanding from the early product reviews was that the electrostatic bond will not brush or wash away. This however is a weak ionic bond, therefore reapplication is needed.
Partial Ultrasound Scans: Learning And Pricing From A Different Perspective
The more affordable the service, the more clients will do it, and the more practice you get to get better and do better quality full scans for full price.
Is Cold Sterilization Appropriate For Dental Instruments?
Cold sterilization solutions take way longer to acheive sterilization than an autoclave does, and an autoclave is verifiable.
If Owner Declines Surgery For Volvulus, Is Trying To Untwist With A Stomach Tube Acceptable And How Can I Do It?
I saw a patient on emergency last night with a GDV. I couldn't pass a tube and the owner could not financially pursue surgery. I have heard of a technique where you can heavily sedate or anesthetize the patient and try to untwist the stomach by passing a rigid stomach tube. I am just wondering about this technique. Have people used it successfully? Should I be offering it if surgery is not an option?
