When Sharing Is Not Nice

Providing and maintaining a secure community that protects the integrity of Veterinarians is critical to all VIN members. If more than one colleague in your practice is using a single VIN account, you and your colleagues should create a group membership. Please click here for more information about groups on VIN.

Efficacy of Omeprazole for the Prevention of Exercise-Induced Gastritis in Racing Alaskan Sled Dogs
Further investigation regarding the cause and clinical relevance of diarrhea associated with omeprazole treatment must be conducted before omeprazole can be recommended for routine prophylactic treatment in these athletes.

Decreased Plasma Concentration of Nitric Oxide Metabolites in Dogs with Untreated Mitral Regurgitation
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with mild to severe, clinically silent MR have decreased plasma NOx concentrations, suggesting that endothelial dysfunction develops early in the course of developing MR in dogs.

Etiology of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Dogs
Dogs with PDA should not be used for breeding, regardless of breed.

Evaluation of Sensitivity and Specificity of Cytologic Examination: 269 Cases (1999-2000)
False-negative results (missing a diagnosis) were far more common than false-positive results (categorizing a healthy animal as diseased).

Struvite Stones, Dog
S/D is designed to dissolve struvite stones. It is not necessary to use a "struvite prevention diet" to prevent struvite crystals, because struvite stones do not form in dogs without a UTI. (There are rare exceptions, but this is true in nearly all cases.)

Drilling Tooth Roots And Protecting Adjacent Tissue
While using the high speed drill to burr the roots of ankylosed lower M1s, I find that the adjacent soft tissue and even the tongue can get hit by the burr. I've had my assistants hold back the tissue with tongue depressors, but feel there should be a better way to prevent this from happening.

AIHA Secondary To Babesia?
Babesia gibsoni is much harder than Babesia canis to identify on a smear, because B. gibsoni are small round organisms, as compared to B. canis, which are large and pear-shaped. They can either be missed, because they are small, or overdiagnosed, because stain artefact can fool the inexperienced.

Protocol For Obtaining Seizure History?
If I could have only one part of the evaluation (history, examination, laboratory tests, MRI, etc.) when evaluating a dog with seizures, it would be the history. I really think it’s worth spending some time on this.
