Canine Lymphoma Survey Results
A couple of months ago VINners participated in a survey exploring treatments for canine lymphoma. 463 VINners provided complete or partial data and the results are now available in the VIN Library.

The results of the survey will be used to help Dr. Bob Rosenthal (VIN Oncology Consultant) design a clinical study examining these issues.

Even if you didn't participate in the study, take a moment to check out the discussion.

Have You Explored Associate Yet?
Associate can help you with your feline, canine, public health and foreign animal disease/bioterrorism questions.

  • The Book sections of Associate (canine and feline) have many new and updated disease chapters that serve as a great "starting point" for your clinical questions.
  • The public health and foreign animal disease sections are invaluable up-to-date resources to help you with questions regarding zoonoses, bioterrorism, and foreign animal diseases.
  • The Tool section allows you to work through cases, clinical sign by clinical sign, building a list of diseases to consider. (It won't build a true "differential diagnosis" but it is a great reminder of conditions you might have forgotten to consider in those "tougher" cases.)

The Fight Against Cancer
Successfully treating cancer is one of the greatest challenges faced by both human and veterinary practitioners. Learn more about recent developments in veterinary oncology in the Oncology Specialty Center.

An array of resources including pertinent FAQs and client handouts, open access oncology journals and links to laboratory websites have been compiled in one easy-to-use location.

The Oncology Specialty Center can be reached through the About Page of the Oncology Message Folder and the Specialties Center page in the VIN Library.

Adipose tissue transplantation may be a potential treatment for diabetes, atherosclerosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
Adipose tissue dysfunction is accompanied by abnormal lipid distribution and storage which contributes to diseases like diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and atherosclerosis. A personalized depot specific liposuction to remove the inactive adipocytes, followed by adipocyte repopulation, could be useful in the treatment of these diseases.

Degenerative myelopathy in 18 Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs
The distribution of axonal degeneration resembled that reported in German Shepherd Dog degenerative myelopathy, but differed with respect to the transverse and longitudinal extent of the lesions within more clearly defined funicular areas. Although these lesion differences might reflect disease longevity, they could also indicate a form of degenerative myelopathy unique to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi dog.

Thermal effects of mobile phones on facial nerves and surrounding soft tissue
The radiofrequency radiation emitted from a mobile phone can cause temporary facial nerve dysfunction that can be due to temporary temperature increase in the soft tissue around the facial nerve.

I got an invitation from one of the consultants to view some pictures. While I have respect for this consultant, I have never met nor even chatted with her so I doubt the invitation was from her. Hopefully she won't be offended that I deleted the email.

Accommodating an employee whose military spouse is deployed
If I compromise and let her go, but ask her to wait until he is actually home or close to being home, would I have to defend the decision to let her have unpaid time off to other employees whose spouses are not in the service? I understand that some time in the future he could be killed or wounded and his being in combat is emotionally trying for her. I am all for supporting the families of soldiers. I let this employee have unpaid time off so she could see him depart three months ago. I only have three employees and this is a real strain on the rest of us.

Medication options for chronic pain
Metacam initially helped then seemed to fail. Added-in Amantadine and tramadol with no improvement. Washed-out and started Rimadyl August 2008 with initial improvement. Lameness progressed further and tramadol was added in with this NSAID. Started Gabapentin late April, no improvement.

Hand hygiene: guidelines and effectiveness of hand santizers vs. hand washing
The physical act of handwashing can be superior for some bugs, but studies from human medicine have not seen increases in infections caused by these bugs in response to introduction of hand sanitizers. The increased compliance and ability to put sanitizers throughout the clinics are great advantages.

Search Tip:
Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search:
- Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search.
- General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.
