Harder, Cheaper or Better?
Keeping your head above water in the current economy isn't easy. Is the solution working harder, working cheaper, or working better? Join Jason Castner, CPA, CVA, this Sunday to discuss Managing vs. Cutting Costs in the Current Economy.

Use the Rounds link in the Main Navigation bar to join the discussion. To find out what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.

Speaking of the economy -- don't forget to help your fellow VINners by participating in the Economic Impact Survey: Take Two

Check out the survey results of this survey from last Fall and share your thoughts in the VIN message board discussion.

As always, all information will be kept confidential.

Canine Lymphoma Survey Results
A couple of months ago we asked you to participate in a survey exploring some of the aspects or treaments for canine lymphoma. About 463 VINners provided complete or partial data and the results are now available in the VIN Library.

The information will be used to help Dr. Bob Rosenthal (VIN Oncology Consultant) design a clinical study examining these issues.

Even if you didn't participate in the study, take a moment to check out the discussion.

If you participated in another survey and haven't seen the results, check the Surveys and Clinical Research area in the Library.

Retrospective study of melamine/cyanuric acid-induced renal failure in dogs in Korea between 2003 and 2004
Grossly, the kidneys were greenish in color with greenish uroliths in the renal pelvis or bladder. Histologically, characteristic crystals with pinwheel radiating striations were present in distal tubular segments. Toxicologic analysis identified melamine, cyanuric acid, and ammelide in deparaffinized formalin-fixed kidney samples.

Use of a petroleum-based bolus for photon radiation therapy of distal extremities in dogs
The dose to the clinical target volume fell within 95% and 107% of the prescribed dose for both treatment machines, which is considered clinically acceptable by the authors. This petroleum-based bolus is equivalent to water in its photon attenuation, conforms well to an irregular patient contour, and retains its shape after positioning.

Canine leishmaniosis in the United Kingdom: A zoonotic disease waiting for a vector?
These data confirm that a potentially significant reservoir of infected dogs is resident in areas where future climatic conditions may support introduction of competent vectors.

I got an invitation from one of the consultants to view some pictures. While I have respect for this consultant, I have never met nor even chatted with her so I doubt the invitation was from her. Hopefully she won't be offended that I deleted the email.

Merial has partnered with Cesar Millan
I have even shown one client copies of the lawsuits he is facing for killing dogs with his methods.
Despite all that, because he is a "celebrity" with his own TV show people believe him and his malpractice is given some legitimacy. Now Merial is going to add to that "legitimacy" and make it harder to steer people away from his methods. They are even going to promote his methods with his videos. What can be done?

Cat with a history of being hit by a car: ovary found up near the spleen
Today, during one of our animal control spays, I picked up the left uterine horn with my spay hook, and followed it toward the ovary -- but there was no ovary.

Tips for performing endotracheal wash in a dog
Suck, squirt retrieved air out (not sample), suck again, repeat until not getting much more. Re-oxygenate, when pO2 comes up, repeat 2-3 times until you have good chunks.

Member Benefit:
The
VIN Bookstore is better than ever!
During the past year, visibility and promotion of the VIN Bookstore as a VIN member benefit was greatly reduced. Why? Because despite the savings available, long delivery times diminished the 'benefit'. We are happy to report that those issues have been resolved...and that once again the VIN Bookstore is truly a member benefit. VIN Members save 10% or more off the list price every day and free shipping on US orders of $90.00 or more. Please tell us what you think.

Search Tip:
Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search:
- Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search.
- General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.
