Jennifer Works for YOU!
Please help welcome Jennifer Fiala, former senior editor of DVM Newsmagazine, to the VIN family! She will use her experience and skills to bring a journalistic approach to how the plethora of information in the VIN community is disseminated.

"I’m working for YOU, and I look forward to establishing a relationship with every VIN member," says Jennifer. "I hope to reflect the issues, successes and challenges you encounter in everyday practice."

To learn more about who Jennifer is and why she is here -- and hopefully more about why she wants to be here, keep an eye on this discussion.

Check out some of her past work here!

The Emergency Medicine Specialty Center can be found in the Specialty and Species area of the VIN Library and on the About Page of the Emergency Medicine folder in the VIN message boards. Keep your eyes peeled for more new information centers coming soon!

Calculate with Confidence!
You don't have to be Einstein to do these clinically useful calculations by hand, but it sure is nice to be able to check yourself (or simply get the answers faster) using the growing collection of VIN Calculators

  • Constant Rate Infusion
  • Phlebotomy
  • Transfusion
  • Energy Requirements
  • Converting to and from SI Units
  • Body Surface Area
  • Echocardiography Normals.

Let the VIN Calculators do the math for you, and save your scrap paper for doodling.

And don't for one moment think the VIN Calculator Team is done creating joy for you and all VINners. They are working on more calculators as well as ways for you to save your preferences and results of prior calculations. Let them know what you think and how to better help you. Send comments to Feedback@vin.com .

Clinicopathologic features of a systemic coronavirus-associated disease resembling feline infectious peritonitis in the domestic ferret (mustela putorius)
From 2002 to 2007, 23 ferrets from Europe and the United States were diagnosed with systemic pyogranulomatous inflammation resembling feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). The average age at the time of diagnosis was 11 months. The disease was progressive in all cases, and average duration of clinical illness was 67 days.

The clinical and morphologic features of nonepidermolytic ichthyosis in the golden retriever
Pedigree analysis of 14 dogs was compatible with autosomal recessive inheritance, but incomplete dominance could not be ruled out. This unique hyperkeratotic/scaling disorder in Golden Retrievers has distinctive clinical, histologic, and ultrastructural features, which are consistent with a primary cornification defect.

The influence of veterinary epidemiology on public health: past, present and future
Veterinary medicine contributes to public health not only in the area of zoonotic disease prevention and control, but also through contributions to animal health, comparative and basic medical research, and population and environmental health. Veterinary epidemiologists contribute to both research in public health and the practice of public health through a wide range of methodological approaches and via the networks of trained epidemiologists working in the area.

Biopsy tips for spleen
In general, unless there is an obvious mass, I would plan on getting multiple samples to make it even worth biopsying and sending in for histopath, and if there is an obvious mass, I would just take the spleen out.

Internet search has owner believing her sudden acquired retinal degeneration (SARDS) dog has treatable immune-mediated retinopathy
In the old days, we thought SARDs cases were retrobulbar optic neuritis cases, and blasted them with systemic pred -- to no avail. In all likelihood, SARDs cases represent several types of disease, and maybe some are immune mediated. There is no therapy for true SARDs cases.
