You Can Teach the Old Student Center New Tricks!
Thanks to the continuous efforts of the VIN community the Student Center has grown into a resource to serve all VINners.

Meet and network with fellow students, find information resources gathered and organized specifically for students, and access the full veterinary information resources of VIN, including VIN CE courses.

Use the new 'MyToolbox' feature to get help, search the VIN Library or pop up the VINdex menu.

Email to Feedback@vin.com if you'd like to contribute to the Student Center or just share your thoughts about the new features.

Educating Your Clients
Working together, the VIN community strives to help your clients be better informed pet owners with the Client Education Resources in the VIN Library. Find even more no-cost, advertising-free, independent online information that you can trust at VeterinaryPartner.com where your clients can go to learn more about health issues concerning their pets.

Keep in mind there are two versions of client handout articles - articles within VIN and articles available directly to your clients at Veterinary Partner. If you find the article first on VIN, you can quickly get to the Veterinary Partner version by clicking the link found at the bottom of the page. Follow the instructions you'll find there to email the correct version to your client.

If you have any comments or concerns regarding the information provided, please let us know. We do it all for you!

Effects of isoflurane on echocardiographic parameters in healthy dogs
Our results indicate that 1 x MAC (minimum alveolar concentration) isoflurane caused significant myocardial depression in healthy dogs. These changes in myocardial function need to be considered carefully when isoflurane is to be used in dogs with poor cardiovascular reserve.

Use of imiquimod 5% cream (Aldara) in cats with multicentric squamous cell carcinoma in situ: 12 cases (2002–2005)
Imiquimod is a novel immune response modifier (IRM) shown to have indirect antiviral and antitumor effects. It enhances both innate and cell-mediated immunity through the stimulation of monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells. It increases levels of various cytokines, including interferon (IFN)-gamma, IFN-alpha, various interleukins, and tumour necrosis factor alpha.

Treatment of 11 dogs with meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin with a combination of prednisolone and cytosine arabinoside
Response to the treatment, in terms of quality of life, was judged by owners and referring veterinarians to have been excellent in five, good in five, and poor in one; their survival times ranged from 78 days to more than 603 days.

Improving communication skills
I dont want to defer blame or responsibility. It is my communication style which is under scruitiny. I am a relatively new graduate and I want to be a GP for life. Which means I need to master the technique of communicating serious information in a short period.

Tracheal collapse repair
If the patient is in severe distress and is unable to be weaned off of O2 or is intubated from the severity of the collapse and cannot be extubated, then I would go the route of surgery or stenting. On a medical level, I treat with steroids, hycodan to supress the cough, and sometimes a bronchodilator (if I am suspicious of bronchial or lower airway disease).

The use and dose of darbepoetin alfa for anemia of chronic disease in cats with renal failure
Supposedly, darbepoetin has less issues with anti-EPO antibody production if used as the first agent. But it may not be very effective if anti-EPO antibodies have already developed because of prior EPO treatment.

Do background checks on all applicants!
Recent applicant looked great on paper. At the interview, she spoke well and was very personable -- great interview. Ran background check: prior offenses included felony for possession of cocaine, misdemeanor for possession of cannabis, fraudulent use of credit cards, grand theft, and multiple aliases on file. Glad we did a background check!
