Seek out new treatments and new diagnostic resources to boldly go where you've never gone before! Rediscover the wonders of the VIN Library today!

Canine and human factors related to dog bite injuries
Biting dogs are most prevalent in lower-income neighborhoods, and boys ages 5 to 9 report the highest rate of bite injuries (178 bites/100,000 children). That's according to a Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association study, which identifies traits associated with biting dogs and the characteristics of injured bite victims. Biting dog risk factors include breed, being a sexually intact male and purebred status, researchers say.

Pharmacokinetics of hydromorphone hydrochloride in healthy dogs
Hydromorphone has a short half-life, suggesting that frequent dosing intervals are needed. Based on pharmacokinetic parameters calculated in this study, 0.1 mg/kg IV or SC q 2 hours or a constant rate infusion of hydromorphone at 0.03 mg/kg/hour are suggested for future studies to assess the analgesic effect of hydromorphone.

Evaluation of common vaginal tunic ligation during field castration in draught colts
Common vaginal tunic ligation cuts the incidence of omental herniation and eventration in draught colts undergoing routine field castration, research shows. The study, appearing in the Equine Veterinary Journal, concludes that the procedure should be considered for males deemed at high risk for significant post-castration complications.

A better way to treat feline diabetics?
The most important thing you must remember when using this radical dosing scheme is CAREFUL and ACCURATE MONITORING. The potential for overdosing is HUGE but I believe the BENEFIT of immediately reversing glucose toxicity and achieving remission far outweighs this risk.

Does tethering dogs cause/increase aggression?
In the mid-1990s at Cornell, Katherine Houpt did a study looking at behaviors in sled dogs maintained on tethers and those maintained in kennels. The study showed the dogs displayed normal, well adjusted behaviors when on the tethers compared to the chain-link kennels.

Are childproof containers required?
My practice manager and head technician went to a local conference and came back saying that *all* dispensed medication must be in a childproof container. This includes ointments. Is this true?

    Funny Bones:
    Lecturer Stories
"At Texas A&M we had a very sweet professor of histology who used 'essentially' and 'if you will' way too often - more than once per minute. As much as we giggled about that, it makes me wonder how often I say 'like', 'you know', 'um' or something to my clients."
