VIN Breakfast at ACVIM
It's time for the VIN Breakfast at ACVIM! Are you planning on attending ACVIM 2004? If you are, let us buy you breakfast on Saturday morning. But wait, there is a catch -- I know, I know, nothing in life is free ... Take the Breakfast Survey so we will know that you are going to attend. That way, we can reserve a special place for you at one of the tables -- and in our hearts! If you have any questions or comments that you would like addressed at the breakfast, please feel free to let us know about these too.
The 2003 ACVIM Forum Proceedings are available in the VIN library. If you're planning to go to the 2004 ACVIM Forum in Minneapolis register now and receive access to the 2004 Proceedings before you leave for Minneapolis.
Going to ABVP? Stop by VIN's Cyber-Cafe (in front of the Lafitte A ballroom in the Chateau Sonesta Hotel) and say hello! We'd love to meet you in person.

Elsevier Health Publishing Raises Book Prices
Effective June 1, Elsevier Health Publishing (Mosby, Saunders, Butterworth, Heinemann, etc.) is raising prices on all its books. If you're thinking about ordering a book from this group, order before the price increase. You'll find a link to the Bookstore in the VINdex (Front Page).
Newly Added VIN Content! (All of these are searchable. In addition, the proceedings are listed in the "New For 2004" box in the Library.) New in VeterinaryPartner.com:

Pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin in neonatal kittens
The half-life of enrofloxacin administered i.v. in 2-, 6-, and 8-week-old kittens was significantly shorter and its elimination rate significantly greater than that detected in adults. The apparent volumes of distribution were lower at 2 to 4 weeks and greater at 6 to 8 weeks. Oral administration of enrofloxacin resulted in poor bioavailability.
Expression of matrix metalloproteinases in feline vaccine site-associated sarcomas
Matrix metalloproteinase and TIMP expression was found in non-VSS, carcinomas, and VSS. No significant differences were found in patterns of expression among tumor types. Metastasis was found to be the only predictive factor for overall survival duration. A significant correlation was found between MMP2 and MT-MMP16 expression and overall duration of survival.
Effects of various anesthetic agents on laryngeal motion during laryngoscopy in normal dogs
Intravenous thiopental given to effect is the best choice for assessing laryngeal function in dogs. Dogs premedicated with acepromazine with or without opioids that require further anesthetic restraint for laryngoscopy should be anesthetized with isoflurane administered by mask.
The three-loop pulley suture versus two locking-loop sutures for the repair of canine achilles tendons
Gap formation can significantly delay tendon healing. Tendon repairs with a gap >3 mm are reported to be at increased risk of rupture during the first 6 weeks postoperatively.

Is Nighttime Water Restriction Ok for Puppies?
I recognize that it is easier to train puppies by limiting water consumption, but am concerned with the "breeder said to take the water away at 8 pm every night" recommendation I commonly hear. What are your thoughts?
Employees Surfing the Internet on Hospital Computers
What kind of guidelines do you think we should have. Where should they be listed (employee manual, job descriptions, minutes of a staff meeting, etc.)? How should they be enforced?
Tech Problems: A Recovering Addict, and a Dubious New Hire
If you decide to keep giving chances to employee #1, and a probationary period to employee #2, it will help everyone if you very clearly delineate what is expected, and what will not be tolerated. If you lay out A , B, and C, and they can't do it, then let them go. Addiction is complex, and the road to recovery is fraught with potholes. Assist reasonably, but don't enable.
City Wants Me to Attend Animal Cruelty Raid
I'd stay away lest you be pressured into pronouncing these owners "cruel" for political purposes of the locals. Then you'll be facing the legal music with the rest of them. Better talk to a lawyer and insurance company about your possible exposure here.
