Double Rounds this Sunday
"The sequencing of the genome of the domestic cat will provide a wealth of genetic resources, specifically genetic markers, for investigating inherited traits in the domestic cat and potentially wild felids," says Leslie Lyons of the Department of Population Health and Reproduction at UC Davis.Join her Sunday to discuss The Feline Genome Project And It's Clinical Applications. Take a break and come back a bit later for Open Book Management - How To Prepare Your Team and What to Share with Elise Lacher, CPA. Learn how to implement OBM and help your team feel more connected to your practice's successes and failures.

Is routine pre-anaesthetic haematological and biochemical screening justified in dogs?
In dogs, pre-anaesthetic laboratory examination is unlikely to yield additional important information if no potential problems are identified in the history and on physical examination.
Clinical evaluation and management of hemoperitoneum in dogs
Goals of therapy for patients with hemoperitoneum include maintenance and restoration of effective circulating volume, maintenance and restoration of oxygen-carrying capacity, and arrest of hemorrhage. These goals can be achieved via fluid resuscitation, administration of blood products or hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers, as well as application of abdominal counterpressure, and surgical intervention.
Adrenal gland disease in ferrets
The exact causes of the adrenal gland changes that lead to the disease are not known. Early oophorohysterectomies and neutering, combined with the artificially prolonged photoperiod experienced by indoor pet ferrets, and a possible genetic component, may be contributing factors.
Update on neuroendocrine regulation and medical intervention of reproduction in birds
Tremendous progress has been made in the last few years in our understanding of the neuroendocrine control of reproduction in birds. Advantage should be taken of these experimentally derived data to develop appropriate and safe treatment protocols for avian patients suffering from reproductive disorders.

Unusual chicken egg
In a commercial enterprise you might consider culling this bird. If she is a pet, recommend means of ceasing egg production (reducing daylength, cut back on feed, remove nest box, etc) and giving her oviduct a chance to rest and heal.
Dogs developed kennel cough following intranasal vaccination; recommended antibiotics for bordetella infections
Pencillins and cephalosporins don't work well against bordetellosis; the drug of choice is doxycycline. Penicillins don't cross the blood-bronchus barrier very well, so the antibiotic doesn't achieve therapeutic concentrations in the mucus lining the airways, which is where the organism lives.
Dog bit a running chainsaw: when and how to reconstruct the lip commissures
I just do not know what to recommend to the owner. Wait until healed or debride and try to reattach as much as possible now.
