Meet the VIN Consultants!
If you're a frequent poster (or a frequent lurker or searcher) on the VIN Message Boards, you've probably wondered "Who are those seemingly tireless folks spending their time and energy helping so many VINner's every day?" Meet the VIN Consultant Team -- over 180 of the most dedicated and talented leaders in veterinary medicine monitor and facilitate clinical discussions that help us all be better clinicians while helping individual VINners manage THEIR cases. Are you a Specialist who loves helping (and learning from) your colleagues? Call Paul D. Pion at 530-757-6881 or email to Paul@vin.com for more information. But DO NOT for one minute think that the only ones who should feel welcome to share their knowledge/experience on the boards are the VIN consultants. YOU, YES, YOU are welcome and encouraged to jump in on discussions whenever you feel you have something to share. We are colleagues living in a community/family and we all have a lot to contribute.
Calculate with Confidence!

- Phlebotomy
- Transfusion
- Energy Requirements
- Converting to and from SI Units
- Body Surface Area
- Echocardiography Normals
Let the VIN Calculators do the math for you and save your scrap paper for doodling. Need Help? Having trouble logging in to VIN? Questions about your membership? Can't find that reference you need for a tough case? Help is a click, email or phone call away! (Hint: you can find this page anytime by clicking HELP on the main VIN Navigation Bar).

Sodium hypochlorite bleach ingestion in two dogs
This report describes a unique case of sodium hypochlorite bleach toxicosis, which resulted in the development of severe metabolic derangements and complications including hypernatremia and hyperchloremia, metabolic acidosis, renal insufficiency, possible cerebral edema, aspiration pneumonia, and possibly a coagulation disorder, which led to the decision to euthanize the dogs.
Comparison of surgical treatment options for cranial cruciate ligament disease in large-breed dogs with excessive tibial plateau angle
Surgical treatment of dogs with excessive tibial plateau angle (eTPA) has a higher complication rate, but comparable outcome to that of dogs without eTPA.
Calcium metabolism in birds
The special characteristics of calcium metabolism in birds, mainly associated with egg production, are discussed, along with common clinical disorders secondary to derangements in calcium homeostasis.

Those big dog spays
This is all very comforting. I did the most relaxed large dog spay of my life this morning (just finished) using the Dowling spay retractor. AND I did my first OVE - and wow, did the stress seem to melt away when I decided to do ovariectomy instead of ovariohysterectomy on this 2 year old GSD. There was way less "oozing" (no torn broad ligament) and generally less blood contamination in the abdomen, something that generally makes me anxious. And I totally cranked on my Miller's knots, and was very confident (unlike usually) that they were going to do the trick. Hmmm... there's hope for the large spay wussies after all.
Squirrel pox
Just an interesting tidbit from our wildlife rehab people. We have been seeing alot of juvenile squirrels with pox lesions. On a whim one of the rehabers applied a nystatin powder called NYSTOP to the lesions. Within a day they begin to dry up & fall off.
Owners wish to amputate leg of young dog with unconfirmed diagnosis of osteosarcoma
There isn't a single correct answer here. I recognize your hesitation -- this is not a classic breed for OSA (osteosarcoma). But unfortunately, the radiographic changes are consistent with OSA, this is a typical location, and OSA can occur in dogs this young.
Why aren't veterinarians interested in rural practice?
If you don't have a spouse, the chances of finding a singleton of the right sex that fits your personality is exponentially less in a small town. If you do have a spouse, the chance of your spouse finding a job in a small town is exponentially less (depending on the career).
