Arterial Thromboembolism in Cats: Acute Crisis in 127 Cases (1992-2001) and Long-Term Management with Low-Dose Aspirin in 24 Cases
When we compared survival data on the cats in the present study that were treated with aspirin to published data for cats that received warfarin for prevention of FATE recurrence, the mean survival time for warfarin-treated cats was 51 days, versus 117 days for the aspirin-treated cats.

Postoperative Hypoxemia and Hypercarbia in Healthy Dogs Undergoing Routine Ovariohysterectomy or Castration and Receiving Butorphanol or Hydromorphone for Analgesia
Administration of hydromorphone to healthy dogs undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy or castration may result in transient increases in PaCO2 postoperatively and that administration of hydromorphone or butorphanol may result in transient decreases in PaO2.

Intraosseous Regional Perfusion for Treatment of Septic Physitis in a 2-Week-Old Foal
Intraosseous regional perfusion with antimicrobials results in substantially higher tissue concentrations of the antimicrobials than systemic administration.

Use of a Hydroxyapatite Orbital Implant in a Cosmetic Corneoscleral Prosthesis after Enucleation in a Horse
Hydroxyapatite orbital implants made from marine coral allow vascular and fibrous tissue growth from the host orbit into the implant and may provide excellent cosmesis.

Chronic Urinary Tract Issues
It's really important to treat UTI as strictly a culture-based diagnosis in the dog and cat. About 1/2 the time (maybe more) that bacteriuria is reported on urinalysis, it's really just an aritfact. And pyuria is very dependent on urine concentration and how the sample is processed.

Shar-Pei Fever Therapy
Linda Tintle is the expert on this disease. Everything we know about this disease is in her handout in the VIN Library. She sees hundreds of these dogs, consults with MDs doing research on the human model for the disease (Familial Mediterranean Fever), collects data, and publishes as she can.

Chameleon With Increasing WBC
Reptile cells vary dramatically -- not only from mammals, but also between the almost 9,000 species of reptiles. The pathologist's experience does play perhaps the biggest role in accuracy of diagnosis.

Chinchilla With Diarrhea: Appropriate Diet Suggestions?
Chinchillas are hindgut fermenting rodents with continually growing incisors and cheek teeth. Natural history wise, they were native to the Andes mountains. Therefore, it makes sense to feed them a coarse, high fiber grass hay as the base of their diet (at least 75% is what I tell my clients). The remaining 25% can be made of leafy green vegetables, cut grass, vegetable tops, etc. I try to have my clients avoid pellets and high carbohydrate foods, as these tend to lead to GI problems.
