Feline Heartworm Disease Rounds
"Wherever there is heartworm infection occurring in dogs, it is also occurring in cats," says Dr. Tom Nelson. "Diagnosis is the most challenging part of this disease."

Join him this Sunday night to learn what serology test results really mean for your patients and how to avoid the antigen vs antibody conundrum. We'll also discuss medical and surgical options for managing heartworm positive cats.

Preliminary studies on the effectiveness of the novel pulicide, spinosad, for the treatment and control of fleas on dogs
These studies demonstrate that repeated monthly oral treatments with spinosad at 30mg/kg provide sustained control of C. felis on dogs. There were no treatment-related adverse events in either study, indicating that spinosad has potential to be used monthly as a safe and effective flea adulticide, providing sustained activity that matches that of currently used topical products.

A clonal outbreak of acute fatal hemorrhagic pneumonia in intensively housed (shelter) dogs caused by Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus
An outbreak of acute, fatal, hemorrhagic pneumonia was observed in more than 1,000 mixed breed dogs in a single animal shelter. The clinical, epidemiologic, molecular biologic, and pathologic data indicate that a single clone of S. zooepidemicus was the cause of an acutely fatal respiratory infection in these dogs.

Selection of feeding sites by horses at pasture: Testing the anti-parasite theory
These results suggest that selection of feeding sites by horses is driven by an interaction between their nutritional and anti-parasite strategies: the horses avoid the patches of tall grass which are generally of low quality and areas contaminated by parasite larvae which leads them to prefer the patches of short grass far from faeces.

Proper wing clipping
So a 'show clip' - while it gives a more aesthetically pleasing clip - can lead to wing tip trauma. As such, I would not recommend it to the average pet bird owner.

Type B queen bred to type A tom
I don't want to take much blood from a kitten to get the right mix of EDTA and blood, so I'm thinking if I got a clean "stick" in blood sampling and ran the test immediately, I wouldn't need EDTA.

Heart attack was wake-up call to make changes in lifestyle and practice
The point here is that it doesn't make a difference how long you live (because you don't know that) but you have to enjoy life while you still can. You must balance the realities of working for a living with having the time to enjoy why you are working in the first place.

Dirt is not a four letter word
Those of us who understand animal agriculture know that exposing our kids to these organisms creates a level of immunity similar to vaccinating them. Others in our society don't seem to get that, and their attempts to create a sterile environment are setting their kids up for disaster.
