Making a rational choice between ovariectomy and ovariohysterectomy in the dog: a discussion of the benefits of either technique
An on-line bibliographic search in MEDLINE and PubMed, covering the period 1969-2004, was performed in an effort to determine if ovariectomy (OVE) is a safe alternative to ovariohysterectomy (OVH) for canine gonadectomy. The authors conclude that canine OVE can replace OVH as the procedure of choice for routine neutering of healthy female dogs.
Effect of repeated transvaginal ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration on fertility in mares
This study compared 23 mares that had never undergone transvaginal ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration (TVUFA) and 59 mares that had undergone TVUFA on 1 to 11 occasions. Results indicated that repeated TVUFA procdedures(as many as 11 times) had no detectable adverse effect on fertility in mares. This finding is clinically important for situations when TVUFA is performed on fertile mares, whether for oocyte collection or other purposes.
The timing of ovulation and insemination schedules in superstimulated cattle
Recent studies have been designed to develop superstimulation protocols that involve fixed-time AI of donors, without regard to estrus detection. Results presented herein indicate that delaying the removal of a progestogen releasing device, combined with the administration of GnRH or porcine LH (pLH) 12 or 24h later results in predictable, synchronous ovulations, permitting fixed-time AI without reducing the numbers or quality of embryos.
The efficacy of intratumoural 5-fluorouracil for the treatment of equine sarcoids
This prospective study included 13 horses and one donkey to document the efficacy of intratumoural injections of 5-fluorouracil for the treatment of equine sarcoids. The authors conclude that the use of intratumoural 5-fluorouracil compares favorably with other treatment modalities for sarcoids, with a long term successful resolution rate of 61.5%. Owners should be warned that resistant sarcoids and sarcoids larger than 13.5 cm3 have a poorer prognosis for resolution and more aggressive therapeutic options should be considered.

Greenies Story Hitting The Media (CNN)
My own personal dog loves Greenies. She takes her time with them and has on occasion left one in the yard. One particular greenie end was left in our yard for over a month, during which time we watered the grass three times a day. The greenie never disintegrated or decreased in size at all. You would think after a month of constant watering, it would have turned to mush, but it retained its shape and density.
Do You Charge To Remove Sutures If The Surgery Was Done At Another Veterinary Clinic?
I sometimes get asked to remove sutures from spay/castration surgeries done at other vet clinics. Practice policy is to always contact the primary vet, confirm date of surgery, and get his permission to remove the sutures if everything looks okay. In the past few days, I have enquiries regarding suture removals for surgeries done locally, but much cheaper than we do them. For the clients I have never seen before, nor likely to see again, I find that courtesy hard to extend ...
I Just Discovered Morphine/Lidocaine/Ketamine (MLK) Constant Rate Infusions: Can We Use Them In Cats Too?
Try running lower drug dose rates - more like 0.12 mg/kg/hr morphine, 1.0 mg/kg/hr lidocaine, and 0.2 mg/kg/hr ketamine - then you can double or triple your delivery rate during the painful part of the procedure, but then taper back to the lower delivery rates later in the surgery to prepare for earlier extubation.
Are Narcotics Safe for Weimaraner Spays? When Would You Not Use Them?
IMHO, each and every anesthetic protocol should have at least 1 opioid -- and usually multiple. I cannot, off the top of my head, think of a single patient situation or procedure where an opioid of some type would not be used. Can anyone?
