Virginia Tech Memorial Fund Donations
The entire VIN community offers sympathies to those who live in the area or who have been affected, directly or indirectly, by this senseless loss of life. While the Virginia Tech community is beginning the healing process, the survivors and their families have a long road to recovery.

To better understand the need, read what VIN Associate Editor Mark Taylor, a resident in clinical nutrition at VaTech, shared with the VIN community.

Mark collated a list of donation funds that will most directly assist those affected.

Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma with intracranial metastasis in a dog
Based on gross and microscopic examination, the primary tumor cells were located in the left lobe of the pancreas and widespread metastasis was found into various organs, including the brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, tonsils, serosal surface of the esophagus, and submandibular, pulmonary hilar, mediastinal, and mesenteric lymph nodes. This case indicates that pancreatic adenocarcinoma should be included in the differential diagnosis list when cervical neck masses are detected.

Residues of veterinary drugs at injection sites
Residues of veterinary drugs have potential implications for human food safety and international trade in animal-derived food commodities. A particular concern is the slow depletion of residues of some injectable formulations from the site of administration. Licensing authorities have adopted different approaches to the human food safety assessment of injection site residues ... An internationally harmonized approach to the risk analysis of residues of veterinary drugs at injection sites, which protects the safety of consumers and facilitates the international trade in meat, is needed.

Equine sweating and anhidrosis Part 2: anhidrosis
The condition of anhidrosis is described in this review, and the latest theories on the causal factors are explored. The evidence supports the hypothesis that anhidrosis is an inappropriate response to prolonged climatic stress (generally combined heat and high humidity), which can be evoked in a small proportion of the equine population.

Should Clients Be Giving Pedialyte To Cats With Chronic Renal Failure?; Why Do We Give Subcutaneous Fluids To Cats With Chronic Renal Failure?
The tricky bit is we want to keep them volume replete, but not give them a whole bunch of extra salt (in the form of subcutaneous fluids) above what it takes to stay volume replete. Important point -- subcutaneous fluid therapy is salt therapy.

What Does "From The Trenches" Mean? A Discussion From The Trenches Of Veterinary Medicine
Historically, from a VIN perspective, this folder was initially set as a folder for the solo practitioners to commiserate about "being on the front line" by themselves.

Methods Of Administering Metronidazole To Fish: In The Tank Or Via Food
When I use metronidazole for prolonged immersion therapy, I instruct the owners to do a 50% water change before starting treatment, and between each treatment (every 24 hours). To be honest, I think the improved water quality probably has as much to do with helping the disease situation as the medication does.

Medetomidine Boluses During Anesthesia For Those Dogs That Want To Wake Up During A Procedure
This is where titrating small amounts of medetomidine comes in for us and it has been working wonderfully. We give 1-3 ug/kg IV while I'm scrubbing in (or just before starting a dental procedure) and then titrate as needed every 20-40 minutes.
