Treatment of Neotrombicula autumnalis dermatitis in dogs using two topical permethrin-pyriproxyfen combinations

In this study, 15 dogs naturally infested with Neotrombicula were affected with moderate to severe pruritic dermatitis. The dermatitis resolved with successful treatment of the parasitic infestation. In 14 dogs, treatment using a topical permethrin-pyriproxyfen combination (pump-spray or 'line-on') was effective within one to three weeks. Two applications were necessary in four dogs.

    Treatment of Equine Metabolic Syndrome

Equine Metabolic Syndrome is characterized by obesity, insulin resistance, and the risk of laminitis.

Ultrasonographic Findings in Dogs with Hyperammonemia: 90 Cases (2000-2002)

Results suggest that ultrasonography is a reliable diagnostic method to noninvasively characterize the underlying disease in dogs with hyperammonemia. A dilated left testicular or ovarian vein was a reliable indicator of acquired portosystemic shunts.

    Field Cases of Feline Ciguatera

Cats presented had normal pupillary responses, no excess salivation, no diarrhea, and no vomiting. All cats affected with ciguatera did demonstrate quadriplegia, heightened pain sensation, normal alertness, and tachycardia; this set of signs is not seen with other types of neurotoxicosis.

Reconciling My Vaccination Booster Opinions With Those Of My Employer

I am in a quandry. I want to follow the feline vax recommendations. I strongly believe that yearly vaccination is not correct. I have a new job. The rule is that we vaccinate yearly unless I can come up with a darn good reason not to ...

    Differences In Glucometer Readings

The reality is, you should not expect any method of measuring blood glucose to be all that accurate, and it doesn't matter. All you really want is broad categories; that is, you want your glucose assay to answer the question: 'is the blood glucose very high, or high, or normal, or low, or very low?'. And your assays are doing that. As long as you expect nothing better from your assays, you're doing fine ...

    Fluphenazine For Horse

The current AHSA magazine has a list of trainer and owner suspensions for violations. Probably 90% of the violations were for this drug use in horses. Used to only see suspensions for reserpine, ace, and bute. I guess it's the new fad in training circles.

Do You Charge Separately for Sedation in Euthanasia Cases?

I agree with all who say that the price for a euthanasia should allow you to include all you need to get the job done in a humane, empathetic, and efficient fashion.

    Exotic and Emerging Animal Diseases:
    Remembering the Zebras

Global terrorism isn't limited to direct attacks on people. An excellent way to control a country is by controlling its food sources. Are you a trained, front-line defense against animal diseases that can cut your country's food supply, spread into the human population, and cause panic in your countrymen -- or are you still pretty clueless?

VIN CE can help you prepare!
This 6 CE credit Exotic and Emerging Animal Diseases: Remembering the Zebras course will cover the clinical signs and gross lesions of these diseases -- and the role of the practitioner and other professionals in controlling the outbreak.

Veterinarians are the best frontline defense. Be ready. Sign up for this CE course today.

    Course Description:
Increased international movement of people and animals, and the current geopolitical climate, make incursions of exotic diseases more likely than ever before. The national response to an exotic disease incursion begins with the local practicing veterinarian, who must be able to rapidly recognize the clinical signs and scenarios that are suggestive of various exotic diseases. This course will review the major exotic and emerging animal diseases, emphasizing the clinical signs and gross lesions of these diseases in various species and the role of the practitioner and other professionals. Major emphasis will be placed on including exotic diseases in the differential diagnosis of various clinical presentations and the importance of laboratory support for the diagnosis of both "horses and zebras."
