Are You Getting the Most From Your VIN Membership?
With so much information and so many tools to choose from, none of us know everything there is to know about using VIN.

VIN's two primary functions are:

  1. To bring us together as colleagues
  2. To make accessing information and tools that help us practice fun and easy.

The VIN How-To Videos showcase the main features and functions VINners enjoy most.

New VINners will appreciate the "jump start" and long-time VINners are guaranteed to learn a few new tricks to help get the most out of your VIN membership.

VIN How-to Movies:

UCD Oncology Symposium Honors Dr. Gordon Theilen
The Theilen Tribute Symposium (TTS), an informative veterinary oncology Symposium at UC Davis, May 30 to June 1, will feature presentations from many leaders in the oncology field, including VIN consultant Dr. Phil Bergman.

The TTS will honor Dr. Gordon Theilen, one of veterinary oncology's greatest forefathers, on his 80th birthday.

Special sponsorships for travel may be allocated for interns and residents who need financial assistance to attend. Register online today!

The Eyes Have It (and now it's all in one place)!
Ophthalmic resources from many different areas on VIN have been brought together in the new Ophthalmology Specialty Center. Browse commonly used material about eye diseases or find answers to ophthalmology questions - all in the blink of an eye! Note that the center has many pages that you access using the selections down the left side of the page.

The Ophthalmology Center can be found in the Specialty and Species area of the VIN library and on the About Page of the Ophthalmology folder in the VIN message boards. Keep your eyes peeled for more new information centers coming soon!

Indications, outcomes and complications following lateral thoracotomy in dogs and cats
Survival to discharge was significantly lower in cats than dogs, for neoplastic than non-neoplastic disease, and in older animals. Survival to discharge was higher in animals undergoing patent ductus arteriosus ligation than in those undergoing lung lobectomy or oesophageal surgery.

Pure white cell aplasia in a dog
A diagnosis of pure white cell aplasia was made in this dog, based on the many similarities to human patients with pure white cell aplasia, including severe neutropenia with selective granulocyte aplasia, serum antineutrophil antibodies, remission dependent on treatment with immunosuppressive therapy, and recurrent bacterial infections.

Immediate mandibular reconstruction of a 5 cm defect using rhBMP-2 after partial mandibulectomy in a dog
New bone growth was evident radiographically and on palpation at 3 months. Bony remodeling was evident during follow-up examinations up to 26 months. Only minor complications (repeated intraoral plate exposure) were encountered postoperatively and were easily resolved.

Enucleation advice for lovebird
I have a young lovebird that requires enucleation of the right eye. The upper eyelid was traumatized by a cagemate at the pet store and is causing corneal ulcers. I recommended that the owner see an ophthalmologist and he stated that attempting to repair the eyelid was unlikely to be successful and recommended enucleation.

Dropping yellow pages ads
I dropped mine in 2006. Clinic grew 12% last year while dropping a $500 a month fee. That's $6000 in my pocket. You'll be happy about your choice, I know I am.

How likely is positive canine parvovirus test to be due to recent vaccination rather than actual disease?
My understanding of this often-debated issue is that immunologists disagree as to whether vaccinated dogs can test falsely positive within 3-14 days of vaccination.

Aquarium fish medicine is a challenging and exciting area of veterinary medicine. It is fortunate that as veterinarians, we are uniquely trained to work-up diseases and attempt therapies in many animal species. These skills serve us well in the realm of aquarium fish. The only additional skill needed will be an understanding of the fish environment.

Veterinarians and veterinary staff interested in or already practicing fish medicine are welcome to enroll in the course.

For information on other CE courses starting soon, check out the Course Catalog on the CE Main Page.

Please visit How-To Of Online CE for details about how to register and participate in online CE courses.

If you're looking for information on CE opportunities for veterinary technicians, receptionists or practice managers, please visit the VSPN CE page. VSPN offers courses specifically tailored to veterinary support personnel and certain VIN courses are also open to VPSN members.
