Weekend CE has Gone to the Dogs!
If you're looking for some good CE on the West Coast but can't take a lot of time away from your practice, consider attending the 12th Annual Canine Medicine Symposium presented by the UCD Canine Medicine Club on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3. The symposium offers 13 hours of CE credit on a wide range of topics.

Suspected venous air embolism
When a catheter is required only for small volume injection or low flow infusions, consideration should be given to placing the catheter pointing up the vein towards the head. If a downward catheter is found open to the air, an immediate finger on the hole may be life saving!

Laminitis: A call for unified terminology
As a disease that has been documented since antiquity, it is surrounded by language that is part traditional and part modern. This can be a cause of confusion to clinicians, farriers and owners. In addition, in the era of electronic library resources and databases where key words are vitally important in driving search engines and literature searches, accuracy of terminology becomes essential.

The importance of conservancies for enhancing the value of game ranch land for large mammal conservation in southern Africa
Conservancies are more conducive to developing partnerships with indigenous communities and investors and may thus increase the political and social sustainability of game ranching. However, ranchers are fiercely independent and may be resistant to removing fences due to the perception that they may relinquish control over their land and wildlife.

Which credit cards do you prefer?
I am interested in getting a credit card that gives me perks- 529 funding, etc. Currently I have one card - an AMEX that I pay off every month. Instead of me writing checks every monthy paying bills at the clinic, I would like to put everything on the credit card, get a perk and then payoff the credit card. I know things have changed in this current market, but does anyone have a card that they like with good perks?

Client abusing dog's tramadol
At the VERY least, script it out to a compounding pharmacy and have it mixed into dead rat flavor.
I'd decline to write any further scripts for tramadol. And when the wife or husband throws a fit, show them to the door. And, completely aside, I would document the initial conversation in the legal medical record. It's not hearsay if it's said directly to you. After all, you will be responsible for this patient not receiving it's prescribed medication and you're complicit to drug diversion if you continue to send out the med. At least, that is how I'd look at it if I were a DEA agent.

Are we allowed to let clients read VIN threads?
DVM Newsmagazine publishes some VIN discussions. Are the VINners in the discussions contacted prior to publication?

Does registration of a microchip mean ownership of the pet?
A client told me she and her husband are in the middle of a divorce and the husband is asking for one of the dogs. She wanted me to microchip the dog to ensure the court would not take the dog away from her.
