Growing Concern About MRSA
While MRSA was first noted in people over 40 years ago, it has become a significant pathogen over the last 10-15 years, and is now considered a potential serious infectious threat, because of the limited antibiotic sensitivity it exhibits. Read this informative FAQ and share your thoughts in the ongoing message board discussion. REMINDER: The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because many topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of "hits" you get can be overwhelming. To help you, the VIN team of consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards. Save time -- check out the Medical FAQs, before you post on the message boards.

The aetiopathogenesis of squamous cell carcinomas in horses. Where are we?
The causes of equine SCC have been somewhat elucidated in the ocular/adnexal region with strong evidence of a role of UV radiation and p53 protein mutation but the causes of equine genital SCC remain relatively unknown.
Parameters influencing service dogs' quality of response to commands: Retrospective study of 71 dogs
The quality of service provided by service dogs correlated only with the vocal capacity of the owners and did not correlate with the physical capacity of the owner. The study emphasizes the importance of nonverbal communication and voice strength when communicating with dogs, and stresses the importance of the applicant selection process to ensure the success of the program.
Water off a duck's back: Showers and troughs match ponds for improving duck welfare
The results showed that without the opportunity to at least dip their heads and splash their feathers with water, ducks were unable to keep their eyes, nostrils, and feathers fully clean. Commercial farmers may be able to improve duck welfare as much by providing water in troughs or from overhead showers as from actual ponds.

The million dollar practice
How much can a solo practice gross and how are they doing it? In 05 I worked in a 3 veterinarian practice that grossed a bit over $1.6M. We were all working < 40 hours per week but were pretty busy from morning until night. Definitely felt like a hamster on a wheel! If there are solo practitioners bringing in > $1M alone, they must be doing things differently. If there are solos doing $1.5M or more...they must be doing a lot differently, maybe even fundamentally differently. Or maybe it's just the basics...the doctor only does "doctor" stuff and the well trained support staff takes care of everything else.
Blue Dobermans and color dilution alopecia
The genetics of blue is very straightforward but the genetics of CDA is not. It is likely a trait that is linked to the gene for blueness and/or is related to the degree of penetration of the gene for blueness. In other words, being genetically blue (dd genotype) is not a guarantee of CDA. The weimeraner is a testiment to that. The follicle disease is directly caused or at least greatly influenced though, but the actual result of the dd gene, which produces clumping of melanosomes into macromelanosomes. Those interfere either mechanically or chemicically or both with normal hairshaft production and lead to the abnormal hair follicles of CDA. So it is complicated.
Unusual final locations of properly implanted microchips
I implanted a chip in a kitten who had been hit by a car and had gotten his femur pulverized. The chip wandered all the way to the stump!
Cat with urethral obstruction died: cystocentesis methods and consequences of waiting to unblock
I'm generally in favor of performing a cystocentisis on a blocked cats. I know you'll hear mixed things on this, but that's the side of the fence on which I fall.
