Rounds Practice Session
Tuesday, April 1 and Friday, April 4
9:30 pm ET -

If you are unfamiliar with VIN's Unity Conferencing System, WebTours, and Rounds protocol, come to VIN's practice session to get ready. If you have not previously installed Unity, you can do so from here. It is very important that all participants download and install the VIN Unity Conferencing System prior to the session. The process takes approximately 10 minutes, so you will miss a considerable portion of the Antimicrobial Selection Rounds session if you do not do it in advance.
NOTE: If you need help installing the software, call 800-700-4636 or email support@vin.com.

What is MIC?

On Sunday, April 6, VIN's Rounds will present 1.5 hours of CE (for FREE!). Join us for The Role of Susceptibility Data in Antimicrobial Selection.

  • Having trouble sorting out which antibiotics to use without having a culture -- or even after getting back that culture?
  • What exactly is MIC, and how do we interpret all those numbers?

Dawn Boothe, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DAVCP, will explain it all!

Note: All VINners can attend this Rounds session, but advanced registration is required in order to receive CE credit. If you wish to receive CE credit, you must register before 8 pm ET on April 3.

To Register: Visit Susceptibility Data in Antimicrobial Selection and click on the Enroll Now link in the right-hand column.

Survival of Equine Herpesvirus-4, Feline Herpesvirus-1, and Feline Calicivirus in Multidose Ophthalmic Solutions
Feline calicivirus, the only nonenveloped virus evaluated, remained viable longer in both fluorescein and proparacaine solutions.

Myocardial Injury Secondary to Blunt Thoracic Trauma in Dogs: Diagnosis and Treatment
Troponins, cardiac-specific proteins, have been shown to be an effective biomarker of myocardial injury in dogs. Treatment of myocardial injuries is currently aimed at maintaining optimal cardiac output and suppressing life-threatening arrhythmias.

We Are Plagued By Miscommunication
There is very little communication between the reception area and the techs/doctors. We don't have any sort of system of duties, meaning everyone is responsible for everything, and when things get missed, there's no one who is in charge.

Crazy Glue For Declaws?
When you put (crazy glue) on the skin, the exothermic reaction can be so hot as to disrupt/kill cells, and that will have a negative effect on healing. The skin approved items in veterinary/human medicine are modified such that the reaction is less heat-generating.

Veterinary Support Personnel Network CE:
Basic Receptionist/Front Office Skills

  • How do you train your receptionists and front office staff?
  • Do you think there are issues that could be covered better or that you may have missed?

This is your chance to get the receptionists/front office staff you always wanted. These most important people in a practice can take advantage of VSPN CE's newest support staff course: Basic Receptionist/Front Office Skills.

Make sure your staff are registered members of VSPN (www.vspn.org, it's free!), then have them go to the course info page to ENROLL NOW.

At $86 (if registered before April 9), this course is a great review for front office staff, receptionists, office managers, and practice managers.

If you have any questions please email VSPNCE@vspn.org or call the VIN office (800.700.4636) and ask to speak to Nanette.

Associate Update:
Acute Viral Respiratory Disease
I hope you will all review this update contained in your Public Health Associate. Although the exact cause of the present outbreak which is being referred to as SARDS is not known for certain, it is thought to be a Paromyxovirus. At the present time it is believed to be a Parainfluenza or Metapneumonia Virus. Viruses in these groups are known pathogens of humans.
