What Do You Think?

VINners receiving unsolicited email offers from LocalVets.com led to a discussion on how organizations share, or don't share, their membership lists. What veterinarians do online A recent AVMA/AAHA survey on digital technology in veterinary clinics is generating some interesting conclusions and comments. Need Help? Having trouble logging in to VIN? Questions about your membership? Can't find that reference you need for a tough case? Help is a click, email or phone call away! Surgical management of common canine prostatic conditions
The current treatment of choice for cavitary lesions is prostatic omentalization, which results in lower postoperative mortality, faster recovery, and fewer incidences of recurrence than other prostatic drainage techniques.
Guidelines for hurricane and disaster preparation for animal facilities
An effective plan must include a priority system, a well-trained emergency response team, efficient communication methods, and concrete provisions for animals and employees.
Outcome of medical and surgical treatment of cecal impaction in horses: 114 cases (1994-2004)
Results suggested that medical and surgical treatment were both associated with favorable outcomes in horses with cecal impactions. In this population, typhlotomy alone without cecal bypass was associated with a low recurrence rate. The long-term prognosis for horses that were discharged from the hospital was good.

What about the NEJM's MRSA article?
I find it fascinating that the woman's MRSA deep abscesses resolved only when the cat was treated. This makes no sense to me. This purports that the cat was continually reinfecting the woman and that she could never clear the infection otherwise. Didn't the physicians conduct a antibiotic sensitivity on the strain they isolated from the woman?
Acantholytic ichthyosis
Wow, it certainly is an impressive lesion, as all 4 feet are involved with thickened yellow horny plaques some of which are 1/4 inch thick. There is also some mild scaling on pinna and back. The cat is constantly flicking its feet in an attempt to get rid of these things. I know that the lesion is rare in dogs and rarer in cats.
Feeling guilty that clients can't afford emergency care: consider offering discounted/free euthanasia
We have a policy that we will always euthanize a suffering animal at no charge, if the clients have no money. We tell clients that we would never let a pet suffer due to lack of money, so if they cannot afford euthanasia it will be provided at no charge. It has been very rewarding to see the relief on people's faces when they realize they do not have to watch their beloved pet die a horrible death at home just because they do not have $50 or whatever to their name.
