  • Having trouble sorting out which antibiotics to use without having a culture -- or even after getting back that culture?
  • What exactly is MIC, and how do we interpret all those numbers?

Dawn Boothe, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DAVCP, will explain it all!

Note: All VINners can attend this Rounds session, but advanced registration is required in order to receive CE credit. If you wish to receive CE credit, you must register before 8 pm ET on April 3.

Prognostic Factors for Mortality and Thromboembolism in Canine Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia: A Retrospective Study of 72 Dogs
Thromboemboli were found in 20 of 25 dogs given postmortem examinations. Mortality rate was 58%. Thrombocytopenia and serum bilirubin concentration of more than5 mg/dL were risk factors for mortality. Severe thrombocytopenia, serum bilirubin concentration of more than 5 mg/dL, and hypoalbuminemia were risk factors for thromboembolism.

Dynamic Right Ventricular Outflow Obstruction: A New Cause of Systolic Murmurs in Cats
Frame-by-frame examination of 2D echocardiographic images after color Doppler subtraction revealed systolic act apposition of the RV free wall with the interventricular septum at the origin of the turbulent jets. Therefore, we termed this turbulent flow pattern "dynamic right ventricular obstruction" (DRVO).

Clinical Features and Outcome in Dogs and Cats with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: 126 Cases (1989-2000)
OCD in dogs does not appear to be associated with lack of training, lack of household stimulation, or social confinement. In cats, OCD may be associated with environmental and social stress.

The Carnivore Connection to Nutrition in Cats
Veterinarians cannot ignore the unique nutritional needs of cats, because -- unlike omnivorous dogs -- cats are cats and true carnivores.

English Setter With Erythema Multiforme
Erythema multiforme can be induced by drugs, vaccines, or infectious agents. It is important to remove all of the drugs that were being administered just prior to the development of EM lesions. In some cases the triggering agents cannot be identified and we are stuck with trying to control the disease in a similar manner as pemphigus.

Minister's Wife Complaining About Fees
She told all her cheap friends that you charge too much. Good. Now they won't bother you either.

VetSpecs-VSM5: Autogain Problem/Solution
I have recently purchased the VetSpecs VSM5 monitoring system that allows me to obtain blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and to view/print 3 strips of Lead II. My problem is that the unit has a mind of its own when setting the gain at which the Lead II is recorded.

Kidney Infection In One Kidney Dog
Another approach to verifying the "realness" of the bacteriuria is to look carefully at the fresh urine sample that is being cultured. Is there pyuria, proteinuria, or bacteria seen?

Associate Update:
Acute Viral Respiratory Disease
I hope you will all review this update contained in your Public Health Associate. Although the exact cause of the present outbreak which is being referred to as SARDS is not known for certain, it is thought to be a Paromyxovirus. At the present time it is believed to be a Parainfluenza or Metapneumonia Virus. Viruses in these groups are known pathogens of humans.
