Palliation of bone pain in osteosarcoma
Some canine osteosarcomas cannot be resected and these tumors often cause substantial pain. A study by Drs. Fan, de Lorimier and Charney evaluates palliative therapy to reduce that pain. If you have a dog with osteosarcoma in the proximity of the University of Illinois, it might be eligible for this study. Let's lead the way in clinical trial participation and, as a community, help advance the way we practice medicine. Check and see if one of the many listed clinical trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients! Don't miss early registration for ABVP 2007! If you are interested in finding out more about the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, their annual conference is April 27-29 in Long Beach, CA. Don't miss the early registration deadline of March 23! For an idea of what it's all about, be sure to check out the proceedings from the ABVP 2006 Conference.

Canine meibometry: Establishing baseline values for meibomian gland secretions in dogs
Meibometry was conducted in 42 healthy dogs, 16 of which were Miniature Schnauzers. The mean meibomium level in 84 eyes of the 42 dogs was 179±60 Meibometer units. Age, gender, and side did not affect the results. However, meibomium levels were significantly lower in the Miniature Schnauzers, a breed that is susceptible to keratoconjunctivitis sicca, compared to other breeds. This report demonstrates that meibometry is a simple and minimally invasive technique that may be readily used in conscious dogs to quantify meibomian gland secretions and explicate tear film dynamics in normal and dry canine eyes.
Efficacy of a milbemycin oxime-praziquantel combination product against adult and immature stages of Toxocara cati in cats and kittens after induced infection
Two studies were performed to examine the efficacy of milbemycin oxime against fourth-stage larvae or adults of Toxocara cati. The number of worms found was significantly (p=0.0002) lower in cats treated with medicated tablets than in cats treated with placebo tablets.
Influence of bacteria and gentamicin on cooled-stored stallion spermatozoa
Certain bacteria may have detrimental effects on semen quality during cooled-storage. These effects are not reduced by addition of gentamicin. Gentamicin can negatively affect spermatozoal function in extended semen during cooled-storage. Therefore, optimal concentrations have to be tested for the respective extender medium.
Detection of betanodaviruses in apparently healthy aquarium fishes and invertebrates
Betanodaviruses are the causative agents of viral nervous necrosis (VNN) in cultured marine fish. A total of 237 apparently healthy aquarium fish (marine [65 species] and freshwater [12 species] fishes) and marine invertebrates [4 species], which were stocked in a commercial aquarium were collected from November 2005 to February 2006. Positive nested PCR results were obtained from the brains of 8 marine fish species, 1 marine invertebrate species, and 2 freshwater fish species. The detection rate in nested PCR was 11/237 (4.64%).

Is Partially Closing Popoff Valve To Maintain An Inflated Reservoir Bag A Bad Idea?
The pop-off occlusion valves cannot cause gas loss from the system. If the bag is flat then the O2 flow is inadequate, the system is too leaky, or the scavenger is drawing gas from the system. The answer is *not* to partially close the pop-off. That is flat out dangerous.

Advanced Front Desk Supervisor
The front desk/receptionist supervisor is the person with the greatest customer contact. We'll review customer service and why it's vital to the success of every practice. The goal is for customers to think of the practice every time they consider care for their pets. During the course we'll study personalities; how to recognize four styles and their communication preferences. By understanding personalities, front office staff can adapt communication style to connect with customers and improve relationships. We'll also study ways to communicate with customers to be sure we're meeting their needs and communicating value so they'll continue to use the practice and recommend it to friends. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: - Recognize personality styles of the participant, coworkers, and clients.
- Adapt personality styles for more effective customer relationships.
- Determine what customers value most and adapt your practice accordingly.
