Effects of Cyclosporine A on Clinical and Histologic Abnormalities in Dogs with Sebaceous Adenitis
In this clinical trial cyclosporine at a dosage of 5 mg/kg/d (2.3 mg/Ib/d), PO, for 12 months was used in 12 dogs with sebaceous adenitis. Mean clinical score was significantly decreased, compared with baseline score, after 4 months of treatment and remained low after 8 and 12 months. The authors concluded that long-term cyclosporine may reduce the inflammation associated with sebaceous adenitis in dogs.

Incidence Of and Predisposing Factors for Nonunion of Fractures Involving the Appendicular Skeleton in Cats: 18 Cases (1998-2002)
Results suggest that in cats, fractures involving the tibia and proximal portion of the ulna are more likely to develop nonunions than are fractures involving other sites but that many factors may increase the risk of nonunion. Use of excessively large and rigid type II external skeletal fixators may be associated with development of nonunions; however, type II external skeletal fixators were commonly used to stabilize fractures in sites predisposed to nonunion.

Clinical Description and Mode of Inheritance of Idiopathic Epilepsy in English Springer Spaniels
In English Springer Spaniels, idiopathic epilepsy segregates in a manner that is consistent with partially penetrant autosomal recessive inheritance (i.e., a single major locus with modifying genes) or polygenic inheritance.

A Review of Bacterial Pathogens in Ctenocephalides felis in New Zealand
It is now known that B. henselae, B. clarridgeiae and R. felis occur in New Zealand; Veterinarians can play a pivotal role in preventing infections by rigorously implementing programmes to control cat fleas, the main vectors of these organisms.

What's the Difference Between Glucosamines?
The sulfated glycoaminoglycans (Adequan, Cartrophen) are superior and quicker than the oral glucosamine and combination oral products. The oral products stimulate the synthesis of sulfated GAGs, but often take weeks, if ever, to reach levels that are obtained by injections.

Bilateral Enucleation In A Dog With Chronic Glaucoma?
Just a note that I got a nice used tonsil snare on eBay for $25 delivered. I had to keep checking for a couple of week until one came up, but I can do a lot of checking for the $200 or so that I saved.

Predicting Ovulation: Vaginal Cytology vs Progesterone
Vaginal cytology is a rough gauge of estrogen level. It is useful to tell if a bitch is in her estrous cycle and also to tell if she is in diestrus. Vaginal cytology is of no use to determine the day of ovulation, whereas progesterone is of great value in anticipating ovulation and breed timing. The length of semen life in the bitch made us think that day of cycle, vaginal cytology, and color of discharge were accurate timing methods. It was only when we started using compromised life semen that we found out how inaccurate they were.

New Grad Working Hard, But Not Making Much
While your salary may not be as high as some of your classmates, you are within the ballpark for the most part. You have your entire career to earn money, but you are still learning your profession.

Click to change the image (CEImage) Is your practice OSHA compliant?

OSHA exists to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing safety standards. It can be difficult to navigate the sea of information provided by OSHA to determine whether your practice is adequately safe and in compliance of ALL regulations.

Sign up for VIN's annual OSHA and Practice Safety CE course, and you'll learn which OSHA Standards apply to your practice, how to implement a safety program that will prevent accidents and comply with OSHA Standards, how to create/refine a Hospital Safety Manual that is specific to your practice, and what to do when an OSHA inspector comes to visit. This course is essential and appropriate for practice owners, managers, administrators and interested veterinary staff.
