Get to the Heart of the Matter...
...in the new and improved Cardiology Specialty Center in the Specialty and Species Resource Center section of the VIN library.

For additional helpful information, check out the Procedures and Techniques page and some of the useful Cardiology Resources in the VIN Library:

The VIN Online Textbook Collection Keeps Growing!
The 2008 version of "Comprehensive Electrocardiology: Theory And Practice In Health And Disease”, edited by Peter W MacFarlane and TD Veitch Lawrie, will now include two previous chapters contributed by Dr. David K. Detweiler.

These chapters, which provide comprehensive descriptions of the features of canine and other mammalian ECGs, will now be available as an online textbook, Canine and Comparative Mammalian Electrocardiography, in the VIN library.

Thank you Dr. Detweiler and Dr. MacFarlane for making these valuable resources available!

New Surveys
The more VINners who contribute to these surveys, the more meaningful the data! Please make your contribution to this community resource by participating in these new surveys:

Here Comes Peter Cottontail - and Chocolate Toxicity!
Those pretty Easter baskets can be full of goodies that aren't so good for your pet. The Medical FAQ on Dangerous Foods will help to make you and your staff more aware of the possible problems associated with feeding pets certain foods and what to do when it happens.
Certain plants - like Easter Lilies - can be harmful too. Don't miss the Poisonous Plant Book!

Use these resources to brush up on your knowledge and help educate your clients on the dangers of chocolate:

New in VeterinaryPartner:

Texas Farm Radio

Chemotherapy: new uses for old drugs
Using chemotherapy drugs as antiangiogenic agents is a new use for drugs that have been around for a long time. The favorable toxicity profile and reduced cost make low-dose continuous "metronomic" chemotherapy trials appealing, but there is still much to be learned.

Cancer clinical trials: development and implementation
The use of controlled, randomized, blind multicenter trials testing new cytotoxics and cytostatic agents is now becoming the norm rather than the exception. Ultimately, advanced clinical trial design applied to companion animal populations should advance veterinary-based practice.

Pharmacokinetics of topically applied ciprofloxacin in equine tears
The objective was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of topically applied ciprofloxacin 0.3% ophthalmic solution in tears of healthy horses. Animal studied included twenty healthy, adult, mixed-breed horses.

Retinal detachment in horses: 40 cases (1998-2005)
The visual prognosis of retinal detachment (RD) in horses is grave; however, horses with nontraumatic RD (most commonly equine recurrent uveitis) may be able to maintain a comfortable but blind globe with anti-inflammatory medical therapy.

Reverse-atypical Addison's disease in a dog
The dog's pre and post adrenocorticotropic hormone aldosterone levels were zero! So, here's a documented case of reverse-atypical addison's disease.

Check thyroid in a constipated kitten that is half the size of his littermates
This kitten has never weighed more than 3#. He also has no adult teeth erupting.

FIP test
Is there any evidence that the FIP serology is somewhat accurate? I have a client who wants to introduce a cat into her household but already has one FIP-positive cat - is it reasonably safe to assume a cat does not have FIP if the serology is negative?

Coping with a distemper outbreak in a shelter
There is also an old IV distemper vaccine protocol that works well. Unfortunately, given the long period infected dogs she the virus (most for 2-3 weeks, some for 2-3 months) depopulation may save more lives than what you are doing.
