Growing Concern About MRSA
While MRSA was first noted in people over 40 years ago, it has become a significant pathogen over the last 10-15 years, and is now considered a potential serious infectious threat, because of the limited antibiotic sensitivity it exhibits.

Read this informative FAQ and share your thoughts in the ongoing message board discussion.

REMINDER: The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because many topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of "hits" you get can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN team of consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards. Save time -- check out the Medical FAQs, before you post.

Food for Thought
Pet Food & Nutrition: A Necessary Review For Veterinarians by M.E. Smart, C. Haggart, J.A. Mills --- a review of the current status of the pet food industry from a veterinarian's perspective. The authors discuss market features, regulation and non-regulation, the value of information currently provided to veterinarians and their clients and some of its consequences.

A modified subconjunctival enucleation technique in dogs and cats
To improve the cosmetic appearance postoperatively, place an orbital meshwork of nonabsorbable monofilament suture (such as 4-0 nylon), anchored to the orbital rim periosteum, in a continuous pattern. Close the conjunctiva and subcutaneous tissues with 5-0 absorbable polyglactin 910 in a simple continuous pattern and appose the skin with 4-0 nonabsorbable monofilament nylon or polypropylene in a simple interrupted or cruciate pattern.

Local and regional anesthesia techniques, Part 1: Overview and five simple techniques
A soaker-type catheter, also referred to as diffusion or wound catheter, can easily be placed during a surgical procedure, such as a limb amputation or large tumor resection, just before closure. In addition, they can be positioned nonsurgically at the site of a lesion that is painful but cannot be resected or when a course of palliative care has been chosen.

Gastrointestinal motor disturbance in rabbits experimentally infected with Strongyloides papillosus
These results suggest that gastrointestinal motor disturbances underlie the anorexia, weight loss, and subsequent death observed in rabbits infected with adult stage S. papillosus.

In-house meeting compensation for production based veterinarians?
I like going to staff meetings and unless they conflict with relief dates that I have set up, I plan on attending them on my days off or on. I feel like the meetings are a good way to get the staff together on issues. And since the boss and I are only together in the hospital one day a week, there are some issues that the staff wants us to work out (ie when to start the 3 yr protocol or if you can get enough probiotics from yogurt) and this is a good time to address this.

Multiple unerupted teeth
There are no swellings in her mouth, no gingivitis, and no pain on palpation of these sites. Do I worry about these missing teeth? Should she have a GA for me to take radiographs to look for unerupted teeth? (And then extract those I find.) Is it wrong to "wait and see" approach and just monitor for future problems?

Making clinical decisions based on blood pressure measurements in veterinary patients
Blood pressure measurement is extremely labile with marked individual variation to stressors such as ride to clinic, odors, noise, handling, etc. I am not a fan of going by the numbers for treatment decisions, but prefer to interpret the numbers obtained ...

Should we change to a high protein, low carbohydrate diet for all cats that have a moderate increase in blood glucose?
If you stick to this suggested protocol, you willl likely put quite a few stress hyperglycaemia, healthy, non-insulin-resistant cats on a new diet, without it actually having been necessary. On the other hand, you will likely also put a few future diabetic cats on a diet that has the potential to prevent diabetes in the future.
