Feline Mite Survey Results
Last month, VIN Consultant Kathy Tater asked VINners to participate in a "Name-that-mite" feline Demodex survey. Take a look at the results and find out if you guessed right or wrong!

Share your thoughts in the VIN message board discussion, even if you didn't participate in the original survey.

If you participated in another survey and haven't seen the results, check the Surveys and Clinical Research area in the Library.

The VIN clinical research team would also love for you to take this canine lymphoma survey. This survey will help us prepare for a possible VIN-hosted on-line clinical trial of lymphoma therapy.

Changing paradigms in ethical issues and urolithiasis
This article defines the ethics involved in the medical treatment of patients. Using a case example, the authors discuss the treatment of uroliths from an ethical and medical perspective.

Ecological and anthropogenic influences on space use by spotted hyaenas
Due to increasing human encroachment into the remaining habitat of many large carnivore species, there is an immediate need to understand the ecological and anthropogenic factors influencing carnivore space use decisions. In particular, knowledge of changes in space use in response to disturbance, and the costs associated with these changes, will be critical in guiding conservation efforts.

Restricted ranging behaviour in a high-density population of urban badgers
We radio collared 17 badgers Meles meles from six social groups in a 1 km2 urban study area in Brighton, UK, where local badger population density was high, and collected data on their ranging behaviour between 2005 and 2007.

Telephone scam
I decided to engage in some due diligence before calling them back, and, sure enough, the business has a reputation for shady dealings. When I called the number the producer provided, I reached a voicemail message stating something along the lines of "we're not here, you know what to do"--not exactly the professional greeting you'd expect from a legitimate media production company!

Should all cats be on heartworm preventive?
This goes to the heart (pardon the pun) of what I asked the rep (the answer to which she did not know): how accurate is the Auburn study in terms of the experimental model of feline heartworm mimicking the natural disease? How will this affect what conclusions we can take away from the study? We see one case of canine heartworm every 3 years or so. I really have to question their didactic exhortations that all cats should be on preventative when the geographic incidence is so variable.

Where to find professional liability insurance other than the AVMA
Your homeowner insurance company should be able to provide professional liability coverage as a separate rider and any good insurance broker can find it.

Frustrated by the grind of rural practice: how can things be improved
What I have experienced is that the clients treat the animals themselves with tinctures and concoctions. It's only when things are going really badly that they call a vet.

Search Tip:
Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search:
- Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search.
- General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.

Funny Bones:
Please cut open her throat...!
Well, as you know from 24, you can give IC epi to anybody who has died of anything, and they will come back from the dead long enough to tell Jack what he wants to know.
