Guidelines for Resident Training in Veterinary Clinical Pathology. I. Clinical Chemistry
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education recently required that all medical specialties adopt a competency-based paradigm for resident education. Regular review and revision of this document will help ensure these guidelines remain a dynamic reflection of the expectations and goals of contemporary resident training.

Accuracy of Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration of the Liver and Cytologic Findings in Dogs and Cats: 97 Cases (1990-2000)
Vacuolar hepatopathy was identified via cytologic examination in 7 of 11 and 15 of 18 dogs and cats, respectively, in which histopathologic examination revealed that it was the predominant disease process. However, it was also the category that was most commonly misdiagnosed via cytologic examination.

Assisted Enteral Feeding in Adult Horses
Enteral feedings should be divided into at least two treatments daily; in a hospital, four to six treatments daily are preferred.

Efficacy of Radiation Therapy for Incompletely Resected Grade-III Mast Cell Tumors in Dogs: 31 Cases (1987-1998)
Dogs with tumors less than 3 cm in maximum diameter before surgery survived longer than dogs with tumors greater than 3 cm (31 and 24 months, respectively). The remission rate was 65% and survival rate was 71% at 1 year after treatment.

Markup For Diagnostic Interpretation?
What's the appropriate markup for having a specialist review radiograph images (ultrasound, etc.). My general feeling is that the fee should be treated like any other cost. However, on our radiographs, our fee also includes our interpretation, so in a sense the client is paying twice to have the thing reviewed.

Kidney Mineralization In Dog Taking Furosemide
If the tissue is mineralized, then it may not be related to the furosemide and it may not be a concern. On the other hand, if these are actual nephroliths, then, yes, the furosemide may have contributed (as it promotes calciuresis) and the stones cannot be dissolved. Either way, I would suspect that the mineral densities will not go away with cessation of the furosemide.

Should Animal Shelters Offer Spay/Castration To General Public?
I personally would resent working my butt off to give low-cost services to folks who are more well-off than I am, and I think shelters that provide low-cost services to all are sending the wrong message -- because they are subsidizing the very people who should be their donors!

Thrombocytopenic Insulinoma Dog
The malignant potential for beta-cell tumors in the dog is often underestimated when evaluating the histopath. Virtually all of them are malignant, yet they tend to be well-differentiated and orderly under the microscope ...
