Mark Kittleson's Case Studies in Small Animal Cardiovascular Medicine
Fancy yourself a great clinician? Put yourself to the test with these medical case studies - presented in a new interactive format. Mark Kittleson has generously allowed the VIN Multimedia Team to experiment using content from his Case Studies in Small Animal Cardiovascular Medicine website.

Select a case, formulate a diagnostic plan and take the quiz to get feedback on your diagnostic abilities. Each case is even linked to the appropriate chapter of the VIN online book Small Animal Cardiovascular Medicine.

Work through some of the cases on Mark's wonderful site and some in the new format. Tell us if you love or hate the new format. Your feedback is what drives changes in your VIN!

New Online Textbook in the VIN Library!
Looking for ways to encourage positive mental attitudes and respect amongst the members of your team? The Practice Success Prescription: Team-Based Veterinary Healthcare Delivery by Tom Catanzaro, contains chapters on building the team and using innovative statistical measurements for success monitoring and continuous quality improvement.

Browse the table of contents and text or search the book.

What do you think...
There's always some healthy debate on the message boards. Join in on a couple of the more recent issues:

Organizations sharing membership contact lists?
VINners receiving unsolicited email offers from LocalVets.com led to a discussion on how organizations share, or don't share, their membership lists.

What veterinarians do online
A recent AVMA/AAHA survey on digital technology in veterinary clinics is generating some interesting conclusions and comments.

Indoor confinement and physical inactivity rather than the proportion of dry food are risk factors in the development of feline type 2 diabetes mellitus
The energy percentage of dry food in the diet was not significantly correlated with the development of diabetes mellitus, whereas both indoor confinement and low physical activity were. The results indicated that the proportion of dry food in a cat's diet may not be an independent risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, whereas physical inactivity and indoor confinement are.

Metaflumizone is a novel sodium channel blocker insecticide
Metaflumizone is a novel semicarbazone insecticide, derived chemically from the pyrazoline sodium channel blocker insecticides (SCBIs), but with greatly improved mammalian safety. Metaflumizone is a novel sodium channel blocker insecticide.

A framework for evaluating animals as sentinels for infectious disease surveillance
We describe a conceptual framework within which the characteristics of different host populations and their potential value as sentinels can be evaluated in a broad range of settings.

Cytology in food animal practice
The collection and sample handling procedures described in this article can help the clinician to obtain diagnostically valuable samples. In many cases, preliminary cytologic evaluation can be performed by the general practitioner.

International health certificates and the PLIT
Health certificates are 50% of my professional life. Do not trust the APHIS website - the information is not up to date.

Tourniquet application
The alternative to the traditional Esmarch (rubber) bandage that I use fairly regularly is sterilized vetwrap. Wind snugly from distal to proximal, ending BELOW the elbow, with some extra 180 degree twists and winds at that proximal aspect. Then CAREFULLY (the skin and vetwrap are closely apposed) incise or cut away over the intended site of incision.

Feline vaccine protocol recommendations
Is there a "best" or a "most-accepted" or a "most-widely ascribed to" or "favorite" feline vaccination protocol out there? The only thing I want to do at this point in my career is to be doing exactly what the best cat-VINner out there does.
