What do you think about AVMA GHLIT Pet Insurance Partnerships?
In July 2008, AVMA Group Health and Life Insurance Trust (GHLIT), which markets health and life insurance to veterinarians, announced a partnership with Pets Best and Aetna Insurance companies.

Be HEARD in Schaumburg. Take the Survey
The results of this survey have been requested by AVMA leadership for discussion at the next Board of Governers meeting.

OVER 1500 VINners have responded.

Get caught up on the story with the links below and then tell us what you think by taking this quick survey (it should take less than 1 minute to complete). (Of course, your responses will remain anonymous, as always.)

This survey will close this Friday, March 13... preliminary results will be released to VINners and all colleagues next week.

VIN Student Center: Resources for Students and Old Pros Alike
Zoonotic diseases present an increasing risk to public health and are the greatest link between human and animal medicine.

Learn more about how animal diseases can affect humans and search articles from governmental & university resources in the Public Health and Epidemiology section of the VIN Student Center.

Special thanks to Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison for their contributions.

Thanks to the continuous efforts of the VIN community, the Student Center has grown into a resource to serve all VINners.

E-mail to Feedback@vin.com if you'd like to contribute to the Student Center and don't forget to share your VIN experience on your school message boards.

Short- and long-term follow-up of glomerular and tubular renal markers of kidney function in hyperthyroid cats after treatment with radioiodine
Significant changes in kidney function occur within 4 weeks post-treatment and none thereafter. Pre-treatment measurement of GFR, USG, and serum TT4 can have possible predictive value regarding the development of post-treatment renal azotemia.

Changing paradigms of feline idiopathic cystitis
No single model explains all the biological variability observed in cats with idiopathic cystitis. The authors' experience and available evidence indicate that feline idiopathic cystitis represents a syndrome resulting from a number of separate underlying but potentially interrelated mechanisms rather than a disease with a single cause.

Quantitative analysis of 4468 uroliths retrieved from farm animals, exotic species, and wildlife submitted to the Minnesota urolith center: 1981 to 2007
This report summarizes the results of quantitative mineral analysis of uroliths retrieved from 4468 animals sent to the Minnesota Urolith Center. It also encompasses the most extensive database about uroliths from animals other than domesticated dogs and cats found in the literature.

L6 fracture repair
There are several ways you could fix this. Normally I would use bone cement and pins/screws in L5 and either L7 or the ileum. But if there are wounds in this area I don't like to use bone cement and would probably use external fixation with a half ring-type device, so you could remove the implants once it's healed.

Bates body radiographs
Well, I finally found my own bouncing baby Bates body on a rad. The cat went on to be euthanized shortly after the rads were done, so I was able to retrieve the Bates body to look at. Here are photos of what I found.

Logistics of setting up a rural spay/neuter program
Our area has problems with unvaccinated and unneutered dogs roaming in packs, killing livestock and pets, and menacing humans. So we're looking for tips on setting up a spay/neuter program.

Conjunctival lacerations: positioning techniques for surgical repair
What you are learning is one of the truest lessons of surgery. It's all about exposure. The best way to help with exposure is positioning.
