X-linked Granulomatous Disease
Some immune deficiencies can cause infectious granulomatous diseases due to inability to kill bacteria or fungi. If you've seen a dog with granulomatous infections, you may be able to take part in an international study that will try to unravel the mysteries of this illness. Check and see if you have patients that may be eligible for these and other clinical trials! Let's lead the way in clinical trial participation and, as a community, help advance the way we practice medicine!

Infection of dogs by experimental inoculation with human isolates of Giardia duodenalis: Clinical and laboratory manifestations
The susceptibility of dogs to experimental inoculation with trophozoites and cysts of human isolates of Giardia duodenalis and the clinical and laboratory profiles of infection of these animals were studied. A prepatent period was observed at 5-6 days post-inoculation (p.i.) in the inoculated dogs, with cysts eliminated for approximately 3 months. No alterations were seen in the clinical parameters evaluated. Anemia was observed at 15 p.i. in the inoculated dogs.
Do avian brood parasites eavesdrop on heterospecific sexual signals revealing host quality?
Here, we propose that obligate avian brood parasites, which always lay their eggs in foreign nests of individuals of other species, may eavesdrop on their host sexual signals to locate nests of high quality individuals in which to lay their parasitic eggs. Sexual signal variation can honestly signal parental quality. Thus, by eavesdropping on sexual signals, parasites may select high quality foster parents for their own offspring.
Evaluation of equine papillomas, aural plaques, and sarcoids for the presence of Equine papillomavirus DNA and Papillomavirus antigen
Together, Equine papillomavirus DNA or Papillomavirus antigen (or both) was demonstrated in 26 (68%) of the 38 equine papillomas. Although aural plaques contained Papillomavirus antigen, they were negative for Equine papillomavirus DNA; therefore, we hypothesize that aural plaques contain a Papillomavirus distinct from Equine papillomavirus.
Progesterone supplementation during mid-gestation increases the risk of abortion in Neospora-infected dairy cows with high antibody titres
Progesterone-treated cows with a high antibody titre showed a likelihood of abortion 14.3 times higher than those not treated, while in cows with low antibody titres, exogenous progesterone had no effect.

The Future Of VIN: What Should VIN's Purpose Be?
If you had the power to control the destiny of VIN -- and VINners do -- how would you steer this ship so that we can all look back in 30, 50, or 100 years with pride at what VIN has accomplished and become, rather than just reiminisce about what it once was.
Techniques For Minimizing Animal Bites During Procedures And When Removing Pet From Cage; Tips On Reducing Stress And Anxiety In Cats In Clinic
Can anyone refer me to some good resources that can help me teach my staff how to avoid bites? I feel like I do the basic stuff (muzzles, cat bags, anesthesia, "will bite" stickers, etc.), but I still seem to have problems. Any hints or experiences that have helped any of you reduce bites would be greatly appreciated.
Techniques For Taking Dental Radiographs In Rats
Lateral views will work very well. You can use #4 film extra-orally and get very diagnostic films. I would take VD or DV as well. Straight laterals will allow better evaluation of the relationship of the cheek teeth.
Pros And Cons Of Parents Asking For Job For Their Children; Have Students Observe/Job-Shadow Before Hiring
I'm seeing a trend that seems to be getting worse and worse and want to know if I'm being unreasonable -- parents calling on behalf of their high school children, asking about a job.
