New AAFP Guidelines
The American Association of Feline Practitioners has issued a companion summary to the AAFP 2006 Feline Vaccination Guidelines and an information brief about virulent systemic feline calicivirus infections.

The guidelines reiterate recommendations for vaccines in adult cats and provide important new information concerning vaccines in kittens. The new information has led to changes in protocols for vaccinating kittens against panleukopenia, rabies and feline leukemia virus. Recent concerns from veterinarians prompted the AAFP to release the information brief on feline calicivirus. The brief describes clinical and diagnostic considerations for outbreaks of disease associated with highly pathogenic strains.

Additional guidelines on heartworm, pain management, behavior and other feline topics are available in the AAFP VIN Resource library.

The human-canine environment: A risk factor for non-play bites?
Dogs acquired for companionship were more likely to bite than those acquired for protection. Overall, dogs which were less restricted in their interactions with humans were at elevated risk for biting.

Pharmacokinetics of metaflumizone and amitraz in the plasma and hair of dogs following topical application
These studies indicate that the ectoparasitic activity is due to exposure of the parasites to metaflumizone and amitraz on the surface of the host (hair and/or skin), not to exposure via the circulatory system of the host.

Vacuum-assisted closure for treatment of a deep shell abscess and osteomyelitis in a tortoise
Findings suggested that vacuum-assisted closure with silver-impregnated bandaging materials may provide advantages over traditional methods in the treatment of shell lesions in chelonians, including faster wound healing, improved cosmetic appearance of the healed wound, superior control of microbial contamination, and lower overall treatment costs.

Should we be using the new calici vaccine?
First, there is no "common" calici strain. There are literally thousands of Calici strains and the virus mutates rapidly. That's where the "virulent" types come from. They mutate out of the caliciviruses already being carried in a group of cats. VS-FCV is not a disease of household pets.

Cutting IM pins
Your ability to cut tibial pins short is kind of dependent on where the pin tip is exiting. It's easier to get he normograded ones shorter, because retrograded ones almost invariably come out a litle caudal to where you can get the cutter tips in well. I find the pins easiest to cut with the stifle in full flexion and with someone retracting the patellar tendn a bit with a Miller-Senn or Hohmann retractor. Then, of course, you need to clench your teeth while saying the magic orthopedic word in an emphatic and quietly explosive fashion.
