What's the Dose?
When searching VIN for information on drugs, one useful trick is to click the Drug Resources tab to limit your search to information from Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, the NACA Formulary, COMPAS MSDS Sheets, the CVP Drug Label Database, the Pet Pharmacy (client handouts) and other valuable drug resources.

Find even more helpful information on the Drug Resources page in the Library.

Browse the Veterinary Journals Online
When you SEARCH VIN, you scan nearly 2 million content items. Within this mass of information are citations and abstracts relevant to veterinary practice from thousands of clinical and biomedical journals.

Included in this journal collection are the complete (well, likely a few have been missed) collection of citations and abstracts (and sometimes more) from over 150 core veterinary journals.

Most articles have an author summary, along with the rest of the bibliographic information. Whenever possible, if the article is in the public domain or the author has given their permission, the full text version or a link to it is made available.

If the full text version is not available, it can still be ordered for a small fee (thanks to an arrangement with the UC Davis Carlson Health Sciences Library) through the Document Delivery System. Use the 'Order this Article' button at the top right of the page.

VIN's librarians continuously reevaluate the veterinary journal list. If you have journals you'd like VIN to add, please email Becky@vin.com with your suggestions.

Need Articles for Your Clinic Newsletter? Look No Further!
The Newsletter Article Bank is here to help you. Thanks to VINners' contributions, this growing collection of articles is available for use in your clinic's newsletters.

Contribute to the Newsletter Bank
The Newsletter Bank accepts deposits as well as withdrawals! Contribute your articles for others to share. To deposit an article, please send a Word or Notepad document (or send a link to it) to Phyllis DeGioia at Phyllis@vin.com (That's what VIN is all about - for veterinarians, by veterinarians!)

NOTE: Before sharing or re-publishing any other VIN content, please be sure to check the VIN community's Privacy Policy -- generated by the VIN Community, for the VIN Community -- or contact VINgram@vin.com to learn the proper procedures for doing so.

Efficacy of a novel formulation of metaflumizone plus amitraz for the treatment of demodectic mange in dogs
Success rates, based on zero mite counts in skin scrapings at Day 84 were 42.9 and 62.5% of dogs for the monthly and two-weekly regimens, respectively.

The use of tetracycline in anthelmintic baits to assess baiting rate and drug efficacy against Echinococcus multilocularis in foxes
The prevalence of E. multilocularis infection in foxes before baiting (1999-2000) was 58% (88/153), whereas in the fourth year of bait distribution year (2004), it decreased to 11% (5/45).

Spirorchiidiosis (Digenea: Spirorchiidae) and lesions associated with parasites in Caribbean green turtles (Chelonia mydas)
Four species of cardiovascular flukes were collected from 39 of 40 of the turtles, and Neospirorchis species were identified in seven of the 47 by histological examination. The pathological changes associated with the spirorchiids and their eggs included aneurysms, arteritis of great vessels with dark nodular thickenings, endocarditis, haemorrhagic lesions, thrombi, vasculitis, and granulomatous reactions in all the turtles.

Limping sheltie
My first differential looking at this is osteosarcoma. To diagnose I would be getting a good biopsy right from the center of the lytic area. In theory you could first try a needle aspirate into that lytic bone to see whether you can retrieve something diagnostic (do it just like you would do a lump aspirate). This will let you do something without anesthetizing the dog.

Hypertrophic osteopathy
I've talked with the owners about quality of life (e.g., treat pain, ensure eating, etc.) I want to help this dog the best I can but I don't want to do unnecessary tests and spend money that doesn't result in a change in plan or outcome. Is it worth doing diagnostics to find a primary tumor? (Is there much we can do with any tumor given the severity of radiographic and clinical signs?)

Client incentives for referring new clients to us
We send a thank you letter to any client who refers someone to the practice, specifying who they referred and giving them a $10 credit coupon they can use.

Progressive multifocal neurologic disease in young dog due to spirocerca lupi migration
A 6 year old cocker spaniel presented about a month ago with monoparesis of right hind leg. On physical exam, the dog had pain on flexion of neck to the left and no other abnormalities. No improvement after strict rest, and the dog is now ataxic and hypermetric in all limbs.

    Search Tip:
Your search is more likely to return the results you desire if you enter more than a SINGLE WORD as your search request.
    - Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM.
    - General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific phrase like RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
