What do you think about AVMA GHLIT Pet Insurance Partnerships?
In July 2008, AVMA Group Health and Life Insurance Trust (GHLIT), which markets health and life insurance to veterinarians, announced a partnership with Pets Best and Aetna Insurance companies.

Warning On VETSULIN/CANINSULIN Starting Dose Recommendations
Some older VETSULIN and CANINSULIN package inserts contain the recommendation to start newly-diagnosed diabetics on 1 iu/kg of insulin. Most endocrinologists, however, consider this dose to be too high for a starting dose and recommend using this and other insulin types at a starting dosage of 0.25-0.5 iu/kg twice a day.

The higher starting dosage of 1 iu/kg could lead to clinically significant hypoglycemia in some patients and, when used once daily, could also result in short duration of insulin action.

Intervet/Schering Plough has amended its advice since March 2008 (once new controlled data was obtained to make this possible from a legal perspective). Up to date product information can since be found on new package inserts and also the vetsulin website. VIN members are therefore advised to disregard the previous/old dosing recommendations when using this useful insulin type.

VIN Evolving For You!
The VIN Team is hard at work for you!

The VIN Wizards, Info Seeking Geeks, Tech Support Team, VINGRAM, Multimedia Team, CE Team, Consultants, Associate Editors, Reps, Reporters, Librarians, VSPN, eVetsites, VetVision, VeterinaryPartner writers and editors, Legal Support, Bookstore, Foundation, Board of Directors, Artists, VIN This Week Team and all who toil day and night making VIN, VSPN and VIN related services work for you and your staff are constantly tweaking and adding to our community.

Changes happen so often and so fast that we sometimes forget to tell you about them. That's BAD! We know it is.

We promise to do better at keeping you and all VINners informed about these changes.

Two recent changes of note are:

  • Beta.vin.com
    - If you want the latest and greatest and want to be on the "bleeding edge" of where VIN is going, make this your VIN Homepage.

    - Beta.vin.com has an all new and improved security system with the log out functionality many VINners have been asking for.

    - The "plan" is for Beta.vin.com to help speed the testing and release of new features. There are many features we have been playing with, but been afraid to release because they aren't fully "cooked." Hopefully Beta.vin.com will provide the "sandbox" where we all can play knowing that if it doesn't quite work as planned, we can retreat to good-ole VIN.com and find the tested and mature features and toolsets we've all come to trust. More details.

  • Presenter V2 Beta
    - This version of the Presenter (VIN's image viewer technology) is so cool that we pushed it live to VIN.com as well as Beta.vin.com. You'll find a link to the beta viewer below every image in the message boards. Click the link and play with it. You'll find that images enlarge without loss of resolution as you enlarge the viewing window. You'll also find many other features like panning and contrast and brightness Image Controls. More details .

Evaluation the Clinitek status automated dipstick analysis device for semiquantitative testing of canine urine
An excellent to good concordance was demonstrated between the first/second analysis with the Multistix10SG and the Combur9 dipstick, respectively with Cohen's kappa-values ranging from 0.776 to 1.000. Due to automated data transmission to the laboratory information system, the Clinitek status is of advantage in veterinary laboratories/clinics.

Early screening and the role of DARthroplasty as an intervention in young dogs with hip dysplasia
A comprehensive, proactive hip wellness program can be used to correct deficiencies of the canine hip in young, growing, dysplastic patients, resulting in diminished hip osteoarthritis and pain and better activity as adults.

Tibial plateau angle measurement
This is Bear: 4.5 year old Male Bernese Mtn dog with an abnormal sit test on the left Hind. No cranial drawer. It appears to me to have some periarticular swelling but we are having a bugger of a time to try and learn to measure the angles.

Credit card charge dispute
She can claim that she didn't get what she paid for ...yada...yada...but that is not the cc companies decision - they will tell her to take it up with small claims court if you have proof that you provided the service that she approved.

Kitten died from a systemic mycobacteriosis: is this a zoonotic concern?
Histopathology came back as transmural granulomatous enteritis with acid fast bacilli present in huge numbers throughout various tissues. Should I be concerned about the potential for human tuberculosis from this kitten?

    Funny Bones:
    Crazy People
The office manager, who had dealt with Mrs. Crazy before she was fired, told her that we STILL won't accept her business, that her records had been faxed to St. Elsewhere and she should continue to have them treat her pets. Mrs. Crazy came back with (and I quote): "All my old dogs are dead so you have to see my new ones!" Mrs. Crazy was not impressed when she was informed that it was HER that had been fired, not her pets.
