Roundtable on Dietary Management of Obesity and Diabetes in Cats

We know there is a connection between feline obesity and serious health problems, including type 2 diabetes. However, we also know that not every feline diabetic is overweight--nor does every obese cat become diabetic. How, then, do we approach these patients? In what ways are obese and diabetic patients alike and different? What is the optimal feeding program for each patient?

Read the transcript of this roundtable that addresses current thoughts about these issues and more.

Deafness in Dogs and Cats: The Role of Coat Colour, Eye Colour and Gender
It must be remembered that in animals with CHSD, auditory development precedes normally until three weeks of age, and also that full maturation of the BAER doesn't occur until 40 days, so hearing testing should not be carried out before five weeks of age.

The Use of Adrenaline, Methoxamine and Vasopressin in Cardiopulmonary and Cerebral Resuscitation of Dogs
The use of methoxamine avoids some of the adverse effects of adrenaline, but its efficacy as an adequate vasopressor for cardiopulmonary and cerebral resuscitation is questionable.

Comparison of ear notch immunohistochemistry, ear notch antigen-capture ELISA, and buffy coat virus isolation for detection of calves persistently infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus
Both immunohistochemistry and antigen-capture ELISA are accurate at detecting BVDV-infected calves, but veterinarians and producers should be advised that both tests detect some calves acutely infected with BVDV in addition to persistent infection animals. Repeat testing using virus isolation or reverse-transcription PCR on buffy coat samples should be performed at 30 days after initial screening to conclusively discriminate between acute cases and persistent infection.

Clinical and clinicopathological changes in 6 healthy ponies following intramuscular administration of multiple doses of imidocarb dipropionate
Haematological variables and selected serum indices were examined in 6 healthy ponies following 4 intramuscular doses of 4 mg/kg imidocarb dipropionate administered every 72 hours. This treatment regime has been reported to sterilise experimental Babesia equi infections in horses.

MLK CRIs In Obstructed Cats And For A Limb Amputation In A Cat; Morphine vs Buprenex; Hydromorphone Epidurals
In general, if I have a pure mu on board, I usually do not mix it with a mixed agonist/antagonist as I would not get the full benefit of the mu. Fortunately, buprenorphine seems to be a great analgesic for cats. There are places when I will use buprenorphine in cats that I would not even reach for it in dogs.
