Euthanasia and Grief Management

A great veterinary staff is essential to the success of a veterinary practice. Recognizing the needs of veterinary staff, VIN created Veterinary Support Personnel Network several years ago. Membership in VSPN is free!

What is the one topic everyone avoids in veterinary medicine? "Euthanasia and Grief Management" is a 4 Real Time session VSPN CE course (6 CE technician hours) that everyone in the hospital should sign up for. Cecelia Soares, DVM, MS will direct this interactive workshop on dealing with clients in various stages of grief and how to manage staff stress when the euthanasias come rolling in.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • How to prepare the client for euthanasia of the animal
  • How the entire veterinary team can best support the client in these situations
  • The four steps in closure, the "nuts and bolts" of the euthanasia procedure
  • How to handle untoward reactions of clients
  • How to handle client retention by overcoming the natural aversion clients feel about returning to the practice where their animal died
  • How to manage stress of the veterinary practice team, especially following multiple losses

This class is a MUST for anyone in practices that see euthanasias or are in shelter medicine. Click here for more information
