Participate In Clinical Trials!
Between the demands of practice and personal life, your precious free time (if you have any) is probably limited. Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office?

Simply visit the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page to find a study recruiting patients. Be a part of the solution. Help lead the way in answering questions that matter.

If you have a patient who fits the criteria for this newly added clinical trial, click the link to see how to enroll. Check the clinical trials page to see if one of the other ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients.

If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.

The Eyes Have It (and now it's all in one place)!
Ophthalmic resources from many different areas on VIN have been brought together in the new Ophthalmology Specialty Center. Browse commonly used material on eye diseases or find answers to ophthalmology questions - all in the blink of an eye!

The Ophthalmology Center can be found in the Species and Specialty area of the VIN library and on the About Page of the Ophthalmology folder in the VIN message boards. Keep your eyes peeled for more new information centers coming soon!

Just The FAQs
The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because many topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of "hits" you get can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN team of consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards. Save time -- check out the Medical FAQs, before you post.

The in vitro effect of pH on osteoclasts and bone resorption in the cat: implications for the pathogenesis of FORL
Dental disease due to osteoclast over-activity reaches epidemic proportions in older domestic cats and has also been reported in wild cats. Feline osteoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL) involve extensive resorption of the tooth leaving it liable to root fracture and subsequent tooth loss. The aetio-pathogenesis of FORL is not known. Recent work has shown that systemic acidosis causes increased osteoclast activation and that loci of infection or inflammation in cat mouth are likely to be acidotic.

Offer basic behavior counseling for every pet at every visit
Behavior problems are an important cause of pet relinquishment. Through basic behavior counseling, practitioners can help make sure a lifelong bond is formed and prevent relinquishment.

Pregnant rats treated with a serotonin precursor have reduced fetal weight and lower plasma volume and kallikrein levels
With the hypothesis that an increase in serotonin would reduce volume expansion and cause fetal growth restriction, we evaluated the maternal and fetal effects of the administration of the serotonin precursor 5-hidroxytryptophan (5-HTP) to Sprague-Dawley rats.

The No-Lo practice
The veterinary industry is becoming less profitable and that is showing up in declining practice valuations. That is an *industry* trend. The cause is simple. The cost of providing veterinary services is going up faster than veterinary owners are raising their fees. That’s it! It is that simple!!!

Microscopy technique
I was at a lecture last month and she was talking about preparing cytology specimens. She said that the 40x objective on microscopes works better if you put a drop of immersion oil on the slide followed by a coverslip so the objective never touches the oil. I tried it and could not believe how much clearer, brighter and bigger everything looked, even under 10x! I just have to make sure there are no thick spots in my ear cytology preps. If I am the only one who didn't know this, don't tell me!

Specialists vs. referring veterinarians: improving communication and working together
I have an entire letter previously composed for a dental referral person. I do disagree: the 1st priority is the animal, but the client and the veterinarian who referred is 2nd equally. You can't move us down in priority until we ask not to be considered in future consultations. Otherwise, why choose that particular location for referral?
