ConAgra Recalls Peter Pan/Great Value Peanut Butter
A Salmonella outbreak that has slowly grown to nearly 300 cases in 39 states since August has been linked to tainted peanut butter. According to officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is believed to be the first such outbreak associated with peanut butter in the U.S. Read more about it on the message boards!
NSAID Info For Your Clients
NSAIDs are commonly used to control pain in dogs, however, many pet owners may not know how to use them safely. To help you educate your clients on the correct use of NSAIDs in dogs, the FDA has published a brochure which includes important information all pet owners should know. (Dial-up users may prefer to access the text version.)
Featured Book: Equine Infectious Diseases
Ideal for both practitioners and students, this comprehensive resource covers the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious disease in horses. The text includes complete coverage of the individual diseases caused by each type of agent. A section on clinical problems examines conditions such as ocular infections, CNS infections, and skin infections. It also addresses preventing and controlling infectious disease outbreaks with coverage of epidemiology, biosecurity, antimicrobial therapy, and recognizing foreign equine diseases. Equine Infectious Diseases, Sellon, Long, 2007 is now available in the VIN Bookstore.

Dogs with patent Dirofilaria immitis infection have higher expression of circulating IL-4, IL-10 and iNOS mRNA than those with occult infection
These results would suggest that circulating microfilariae may stimulate, like in other filarial infections, an immune bias towards unresponsiveness in Dirofilaria immitis-infected dogs, consenting long-term adult worm survival.
Serological diagnosis of canine alveolar echinococcosis
Canine alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a rare liver disease caused by the larval stage (metacestode) of E. multilocularis. Its diagnosis so far is rather difficult and invasive. In this study, the serological diagnosis of canine AE was evaluated in 30 dogs with confirmed AE using ELISA based on seven different antigens (E. multilocularis-antigens: Em2G11, EmII/3-10, protoscolex (EmP), excretory/secretory and adult integument (EmAd/I); E. granulosus antigens: hydatid fluid (EgHF) and antigen B (EgAgB)) and by the detection of circulating Em2G11-antigen.
Clinical trials of efficacy of praziquantel horse paste 9% against tapeworms and its safety in horses
A total of 248 animals were treated with the praziquantel paste and all except one accepted it readily. In Canada, Germany, and New Zealand, the efficacy of the praziquantel horse paste 9% against A. perfoliata was 100%. In France, the efficacy against A. perfoliata, A. magna, and P. mamillana was 90.9, 100, and 100%, respectively. Adverse reactions observed were mild to moderate colic, and occurred in only two treated horses.
Field study of the efficacy of halofuginone and decoquinate in the treatment of cryptosporidiosis in veal calves
Ninety, seven- to 10-day-old calves were allocated to three groups of 30 and treated daily for seven days with either 100 mug/kg halofuginone hydrobromide or 2.5 mg/kg decoquinate orally or left untreated as controls. The treatments had no effect on the levels of diarrhoea or dehydration, the proportions of diarrhoeic calves or the proportions of calves shedding oocysts. However, unlike decoquinate, halofuginone significantly reduced the excretion of oocysts on day 7, and decoquinate increased the average daily weight gain of the calves.

Forget The Bad Clients, Here Are Some Tales About The Good Ones That Make Practice Worthwhile
I have a photo album that I keep every card that I get from an owner, with a picture of the pet if I have it. I write a little story about the event too. And when I feel bad, I look at the scrapbook. It is sad, because many of the pets have died, but the notes from the clients remind me that I had a positive effect in their lives.
How To Discuss Workups And Fees With Clients To Increase Compliance
I'll add my weight to the collective opinions here: use "need" instead of "could," "would," "should," or "recommend." Repeat your plan three times to the clients, asking if that sounds okay each time (mix it up a bit). It gets them into a habit of saying "YES" before money gets involved. Be the pet's advocate -- no one else will be, and that's why you joined this profession. This way, you get to celebrate the wonder of what we do every day!
