Pooches and Pain: NSAID Info For Your Clients
NSAIDs are commonly used to control pain in dogs, however, many pet owners may not know how to use them safely.

To educate your clients on the correct use of NSAIDs in dogs, the FDA has published a brochure which includes important information all pet owners should know. (Dial-up users may prefer to access the text version.)

Help your clients become better informed about many other topics with the Client Education Resources listed in the VIN Library.

Find even more no-cost, advertising-free, independent online information that you can trust at VeterinaryPartner.com. If you have any comments or concerns regarding the information provided, please let us know. We do it all for you.

And The Oscar Goes To ...
Okay so none of these VIN Member Slide Presentations and Movies made the list of nominees, but 'American Gangster' won't teach you anything about gastric lavage!

Your fellow VINners have provided these to help you explore different areas of veterinary medicine. If you would like to donate pictures suitable for slideshows or movies, please email Videos@VIN.com.

Repeatability and reproducibility of numerical rating scales and visual analogue scales for canine pruritus severity scoring
The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of pruritus severity numerical rating scales (NRS) and pruritus severity visual analogue scales (VAS). Videos of 16 dogs were evaluated for pruritus severity by 24 observers utilizing three NRS and three VAS.

Oestradiol, but not genistein, inhibits the rise in food intake following gonadectomy in cats, but genistein is associated with an increase in lean body mass
Neutering was followed by an increase in food intake, bodyweight, and body fat mass in the control group, which were almost completely prevented by treatment with oestradiol. Treatment with genistein had no effect on food intake or bodyweight increase, but was associated with a significant increase in lean body mass, and significantly less body fat accumulation than the control group. These findings demonstrate the importance of gonadal oestrogen for the control of food intake in male and female cats, and suggest the provision of an oestrogenic compound could help prevent obesity following neutering.

Infectious canine hepatitis: an "old" disease reemerging in Italy
In all four outbreaks between 2001 and 2006, canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1) was identified by virus isolation and PCR. In three outbreaks, other canine viral pathogens were detected, including canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, or canine coronavirus. The present study shows that CAV-1 is currently circulating in the Italian dog population and that vaccination is still required.

A single subcutaneous administration of buserelin induces ovulation in the mare: field data
No negative effect of the treatment was observed with repeated buserelin administration in either study during the breeding season. We can conclude that a single administration of buserelin induces ovulation in the mare, under suitable conditions for veterinary practitioners.

Switching to digital radiography
So about 6 weeks ago I made the big switch to digital x-ray. After researching it for about a year (and that's after I got serious), I settled on the Fovea Vision Pro 9MP CCD (all-inclusive) system, but I suspect that my experience may be fairly typical for a practice that starts with film and switches over.

Use cabergoline for pituitary dependent hyperadrenocorticism?
I see that Cabergoline is used in Repro work for abortion, mis-mating, induction of estrus, etc. I imagine those who do Repro know more about it than we do. Looking at the blurb in Plumb's formulary, it seems like it has few side effects.

Keep rabies on differential list: regularly vaccinated dog without initial neurologic signs had rabies
I have had a painful reminder that rabies can look like anything. Two days ago, one of our 'regulars' presented with lethargy and anorexia. The dog was 8 and well vaccinated. The only abnormality was fever; her behavior was normal. The dog was transferred to a critical care facility. We received news today that the dog tested positive for rabies.
