How Lame Is That?
Even after years of studying laminitis, the mechanism of how the disease occurs is still not completely understood and treatment remains controversial.

Join Steve O'Grady, DVM, MRCVS, and Andrew Parks, MA, VetMB, MRCVS, DACVS, this Sunday at 10 pm ET (03:00 am GMT) to talk about Equine Laminitis: What Do We Really Know?

Use the Rounds link in the Main Navigation bar to join the discussion. To discover what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.

VINner Lounge at WVC
On Tuesday, February 19 (9am-6pm), VINners are invited to join together in the VINner Lounge (Captain's Boardroom on Level 0 of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center).

Come meet Paul and Nate for a snack and a chat. Meet other VINners. Learn how you can get more out of VIN and tell us how we can make VIN better for you. We look forward to seeing you there!

Be a Part of the Solution -- Participate in Clinical Trials
Wish you knew how to manage your patients more effectively? We all do! Together we can find better answers -- or at least take baby steps toward understanding what works and what doesn't.

You can make a difference. Your patients can make a difference. Take a look at the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page. You might have just the patient needed for one of these ongoing trials -- and maybe, just maybe, it could make a big difference for your patient and our profession. Stop back frequently by adding www.vin.com/research to your MyStuff or select "Clinical Trials" in the VINDEX.

Use of lime sulphur and itraconazole to treat shelter cats naturally infected with Microsporum canis in an annex facility: an open field trial
In this open clinical trial, 58 cats with confirmed Microsporum canis dermatophytosis and 32 uninfected bonded pairs or littermates were treated with a combination of 21 days of oral itraconazole (10 mg/kg) and twice weekly lime sulphur rinses until cured. Fungal cultures were obtained once weekly on all cats, and cats were considered cured when they had two consecutive negative weekly fungal cultures. None of the cats developed oral ulcerations as a result of grooming the lime sulphur rinses.

Antioxidant compounds and oxidative stress in female dogs during pregnancy
Twenty nonpregnant (NP) and 20 pregnant (P) female dogs were studied. Serum samples were obtained from the animals during the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th weeks of pregnancy or during diestrus for the dosage of antioxidant molecules (vitamin E, vitamin A, zinc, and magnesium) and oxidative stress markers (TBARS and carbonyl protein). The results revealed a statistically significant difference between the P and NP groups during the 3rd and 5th week for vitamins A and E (NP greater than P), and between the 1st and 3rd week for magnesium (NP greater than P).

Hepatic Cu-64 excretion in Dobermans with subclinical hepatitis
To investigate whether Dobermans have impaired copper excretion, an intravenous radioactive copper isotope (Cu-64) was used as a tracer. Five patients and eight normal dogs (5 normal Dobermans and 3 Beagles) were studied. The five female Doberman patients had a subclinical hepatitis and an increased hepatic copper concentration. The normal dogs had no abnormal liver histopathology, and hepatic copper concentrations were considered normal.

Accuracy of early fetal sex determination by ultrasonic assessment in goats
Accuracy of fetal sexing under field conditions is high in goats when ultrasound imaging is properly timed during pregnancy and when it is performed with proper equipment by experienced operators.

The No-Lo practice: good or bad?
The veterinary industry is becoming less profitable and that is showing up in declining practice valuations. That is an *industry* trend. The cause is simple. The cost of providing veterinary services is going up faster than veterinary owners are raising their fees. That’s it! It is that simple!!!

Animal shelter euthanasia issues
In terms of burnout - no question there is a human toll from euthanasia. Even when you know that you are providing a necessary service and doing things in the most humane manner, it is a very tough job. I think it is important to talk about what you do, and in your case, find a support system in those you work with. If it is possible to share the euthanasia duties by training others, or even by having an assistant, I would encourage you not to do this alone.
