Vote for VIN!
VIN is a truly democratic society where everyone is free to share information and experiences with a community of their peers. While no society is a utopia, VIN is always a great place to learn from your colleagues and contribute to their success as well.

Take heart! These recent contributions by VINners will help you handle the lifeblood of patient care:

And while we're talking democracy -- add your insights to this discussion about the role of VIN and the VIN community.

Have You Explored Associate Yet?
Associate can help you with your feline, canine, public health and foreign animal disease/bioterrorism questions.

  • The Book section of Associate (canine and feline) has many new and updated disease chapters that serve as a great "starting point" for your clinical questions.
  • The public health and foreign animal disease sections are invaluable up-to-date resources to help you with questions regarding zoonoses, bioterrorism, and foreign animal diseases.
  • The Tool section allows you to work through cases, clinical sign by clinical sign, building a list of diseases to consider.
It won't build a true "differential diagnosis" but it is a great reminder of conditions you might have forgotten to consider in those "tougher" cases.

European CE
It may not quite be springtime in Paris, but you can plan for some great CE in England. BSAVA Congress 2008 takes place April 3-6 in Birmingham, bringing you excellent small animal education with a European flair.

Now You See It: Now You Don't...
Recently added to the the VIN Library are these Dental Morphs, provided by VIN consultant Dr. Jan Bellows.

No giant robots or exciting car chases, but, these transformers are awesome in their own way! Watch normal evolve into abnormal dental lesions or abnormal evolve into a successful repair in a way that will improve your understanding of dental pathology and therapy. These are cool, so don't forget to MyStuff'em!

Thanks, Jan, for this latest addition to VIN's growing Multimedia collection!

Pharmacokinetics of metaflumizone in the plasma and hair of cats following topical application
Analysis of hair samples indicated that metaflumizone was widely distributed in the hair coat of the cat within 1 day after administration, reaching maximum concentrations within 1 or 2 days post-treatment. Data from the present studies indicate that the ectoparasitic activity is due to exposure of the parasites to metaflumizone on the surface of the host (skin and hair), not to exposure via the circulatory system of the host.

Unusual and abnormal canine estrous cycles
This review discusses anovulation, slow preovulatory progesterone rise, "split heat", insufficient luteal phase, and persistent estrus in the bitch. Some of these were temporary dysfunctions; with appropriate breeding management, pregnancy can be achieved. However, in other cases, these were signs of severe, permanent ovarian dysfunction associated with infertility, with potentially lethal sequelae.

Infectious canine hepatitis: an "old" disease reemerging in Italy
In all four outbreaks between 2001 and 2006, canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1) was identified by virus isolation and PCR. In three outbreaks, other canine viral pathogens were detected, including canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, or canine coronavirus. The present study shows that CAV-1 is currently circulating in the Italian dog population and that vaccination is still required.

Grey parrot numerical competence: a review
Here I review data for a Grey parrot that has been shown to quantify sets of up to and including six items using vocal English labels, to comprehend these labels fully, and to have a zero-like concept. Recent research demonstrates that he can also sum small quantities. His success shows that he understands number symbols as abstract representations of real-world collections, and that his sense of number compares favorably to that of chimpanzees and young human children.

Controlling warts on dog's face
You just have to crush some of the warts (I usually use a piece of gauze)and crush a few on the skin/mucosa until they bleed. Most dogs don't even care you are doing this. A few weenies may whimper a bit.

Tips on castrating large goats
I have to castrate a 9 mo old buck next week. The farm has questionable environmental hygiene, I'm a little wary of surgical castation here - has anyone used the large castration bands (as used for 3-400 lb calves ) in goats?

Dog with possible neck pain: techniques for localizing neck pain and performing cervical radiographs
Did you do the Lab-Food-Head-Turning-Neck-Test? Get something incredibly tasty that smells really good. Have the dog follow the treat all the way around to each side so that the nose gets as close to the side of the thorax as the dog can get ...

    Search Tip:
Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search:
    - Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search.
    - General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
For more help and tips on searching see Steps To A More Effective Search.
