Get Your FAQs Straight!
The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because many topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of "hits" you get can be overwhelming. To help you, the VIN team of consultants (and other colleagues with expertise) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) addressing topics that commonly arise in your practice. Save time, check out these recently added Medical FAQs, before you post:
Be a Part of the Solution -- Participate in Clinical Trials
Wish you knew how to manage your patients more effectively? We all do! Together we can find better answers -- or at least take baby steps toward understanding what works and what doesn't. You can make a difference. Your patients can make a difference. Take a look at the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page. You might have just the patient needed for one of these ongoing trials -- and maybe, just maybe, it could make a big difference for your patient and our profession. Stop back frequently by adding www.vin.com/research to your MyStuff or select "Clinical Trials" in the VINDEX. Recently Added: Need Help? Having trouble logging in to VIN? Questions about your membership? Can't find that reference you need for a tough case? Help is a click, email or phone call away! (Hint: you can find this page anytime by clicking HELP on the main VIN Navigation Bar).

Cushing's disease in dogs: cabergoline treatment
The treatment of pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) in dogs has for a long time been focused on inhibiting the adrenal gland using drugs such as o-p'-DDD, ketoconazole, and trilostane, without attacking the primary cause: the corticotrophinoma. Out of the 40 dogs treated with Cbg, 17 responded to Cbg (42.5%). A year after the treatment, there was a significant decrease in ACTH, alpha-MSH, urinary cortisol/creatinine ratio, and the tumor size evaluated by nuclear magnetic resonance.
The use of vacuum-assisted closure therapy for the treatment of distal extremity wounds in 15 dogs
Vacuum-Assisted Closure (VAC) therapy can be used to achieve adequate management of traumatic distal extremity wounds. VAC provides an effective method of securing skin grafts over the wound bed.
Extraintestinal pathogenic escherichia coli-induced acute necrotizing pneumonia in cats
Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) are pathogens involved in several disease conditions, ranging from urinary tract infection to meningitis in humans and animals. Over a 1-week period, 13 cats from an animal shelter were presented for necropsy. All had a clinical history of acute respiratory disease. As cats are common household pets, this report raises concerns regarding zoonotic potential (in either direction) for these ExPEC strains.
Risk factors for ventral luxation in canine total hip replacement
Saint Bernard types and short neck extensions are associated with increased risk of ventral luxation (VL). Poor cup orientation is a determining factor for VL in some dogs, but a protective orientation of the acetabular cup was not found. Revision is successful in most dogs, but recurrent VL merits a guarded prognosis.

Am I over-charging?
There is no right or wrong fee for veterinary service. If you think this is too high you should estimate prior to service to prevent high fee embarassment at chargeout. If this was charged at another clinic it is between the client and that clinic. I try to learn from the fees charged at other clinics to see where my own fees can be increased.
Excede use in goats and sheep
Had a client attend a lambing meeting where mention was made of a 'one time' antibiotic injection for coughing sheep w/o milk withdrawal. She thought it was Naxcel, I thought perhaps excede as I usually like to go at least 3 days on Naxcel...
Formula for pricing dental rads; is it better to go digital, even though it is more expensive?
I promise that you will make that digital payment, with some to spare (if properly implemented and charged for). In this business, sticker shock is common and traumatic to an old bird like me. But, the dust always settles and in the case of dental radiographs, the money rolled right in. If you're doing a COHAT a day, you're already there. Clients will pay for value.

Get More From VIN! Search Tip: Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search: - Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search. - General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful. For more help and tips on searching see Steps To A More Effective Search.
