MyVIN ver. 2.0 is here!
Many of you have asked for a directory of VIN members. You wanted to be able to email your VIN colleagues. You wondered what clinical interests VINners have. All this, while protecting your right to privacy. We think we have the solution -- MyVIN version 2.0. We've been busy designing options to add to the already useful MyVIN console. Now you can display your contact, education and special interest information to VIN members you know and VIN members you want to get to know. You choose what information to display to other VIN Members as your default PROFILE. You choose what additional information to display to VINners you select to be your VIN Colleagues (MyColleagues). The first thing you will likely notice is that the names of posters on the VIN Message Boards have become clickable LINKS. Click their name and see where they're from, their education and interests, and then update your own Profile! Now would be a great time to check out this new version of MyVIN and update your information (options in gray remain in development).

Use of Vagal Nerve Stimulation as a Treatment for Refractory Epilepsy in Dogs
The main disadvantages of vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) are the inability to predict whether an individual is likely to respond to treatment or not and the expense. Presently, the device is available for veterinary applications at a cost of $2,500.
Retroperitoneal Fibrosis in Four Cats Following Renal Transplantation
Possible causes of retroperitoneal fibrosis in renal transplant recipients may include operative trauma, infection, deposition of foreign material in the operative field, urinary leakage, or hemorrhage during the transplant procedure.
Sensitivity and Specificity of Western Blot Testing of Cerebrospinal Fluid and Serum for Diagnosis of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis in Horses With and Without Neurologic Abnormalities
The value of a negative test result far outweighs the usefulness of a positive result. It is likely that the high percentage of horses free from EPM with positive WBT results for CSF is a result of high analytic sensitivity of the WBT, possibly in combination with in situ production of S. neurona-specific antibodies in exposed horses.
Characteristics of Free-Roaming Cats Evaluated in a Trap-Neuter-Return Program
Adult cats represented 85% of the population, and 57% were female. Overall, 19% of adult females were pregnant, and mean litter size was 3.6 fetuses.

It Must Be A Full Moon...
Our E-service was just overrun by a herd of Pizza The Hut looking women with a little poodle whose pelvis was in need of a surgical specialist. There were like ten of these morbidly obese, diabetic-to-be, dirt poor, very upset women who were mad at me because the surgeon was going to charge $2-3000 to put their dog back together. "If you're poor in this country, you aint sh-t" is one of many colorful, yet philosophical, quotes we were privileged to hear this evening.
Increased Vagal Tone Causing Arrest During Canine Castration
But [anticholinergics] don't seem to do much, if anything DURING the stimulus. The stimulus has already caused the vagus to fire and ACh has been released already at the SA node. Stopping further ACh release (which is what anticholinergics do) is sort of like closing the door after the horse is out.
The Trouble With Walk-In Appointments
It took us 5 years to 'train' our clients to call for appointments and it's worked out great. Unfortunately, our boss decided that with the slower season, we're changing our policy to the "take whatever comes through the door and don't turn anyone away" system. I worry that we're taking steps backward.
Elevated Heart Silhouette? Fat or Air?
You cannot determine if something is fat or air based just on the amount of whiteness, blackness, or greyness. Opacity on a radiograph is the result of the total amount of tissue from skin to skin. With a small heart, it is common to see air (lung) between the heart and sternum.
