What's new on VeterinaryPartner.com:

VeterinaryPartner.com, VIN's online information resource for your clients, is always adding new content. This week we added:

Surgical Approaches to Ovariectomy in Mares
A colpotomy approach should not be used to remove ovaries larger than 8 to 10 cm in diameter. Ovaries up to 15 cm in diameter can be removed safely through a flank approach, and larger ovaries should be removed through a celiotomy incision.

Use of Fetal Skeletal Mineralization for Prediction of Parturition Date in Cats
Parturition date can be accurately predicted within 3 days on the basis of the identification of key fetal structures in most cats.

Feline Intracranial Neoplasia: Retrospective Review of 160 Cases (1985-2001)
The most common neurological signs were altered consciousness (n = 42, 26.2%), circling (n = 36, 22.5%), and seizures (n = 36, 22.5%). Cats without specific neurological signs were common (n = 34, 21.2%). The tumor was considered an incidental finding in 30 (18.8%) cats. Lesion location was predictive of tumor type with diffuse cerebral or brainstem involvement predictive of lymphoma and third ventricle involvement predictive of meningioma.

Frostbite in Birds: Pathophysiology and Treatment
The most clinically significant component of frostbite is vascular injury and early surgical intervention is contraindicated.

Client Release Form For Declining Fecal Tests?
Our practice is trying to become more compliant with the CDC recommendations for parasite control in animals. We would like to make up a form for those clients who decline fecal exams. Any suggestions?

Drug Companies: Truth In Advertising
I agree that industry sponsoring/subsidizing CE is a slippery slope with veterinary medicine and it's getting steeper and more slippery. According to the information we get from national CE conferences, it is only because of "generous grants" from these companies that conference registration fees remain so low.

LDDS Affected By Genesis Topical Steroid?; General Guidelines For Testing For Cushing's
LDDST is actually probably more subject to false positives than the ACTH stim. A dog that is sick or stressed for another reason can have a positive result. My approach is that if Cushing's is severe enough that it could become life-threatening if untreated, then it is usually easy to diagnose. The mild or early cases are the tough ones - but they also can probably do fine without treatment (as long as you check for serious complications like UTI or hypertension).

Updating My Anesthetic Protocol: Premeds, Analgesia
Truthfully, the no-premed induction works very well for us but I'm just not comfortable not addressing the issue of pain, so I'm hoping you can help me ease this transition.
