It's Tax Time Again!
Need a summary of your 2007 VIN Community membership and related fees for tax preparation or reimbursement? Try the new easy Email Billing Statement tool - in your MyVIN -- click on MyVIN in the main navigation bar near the top of the page. From there, choose Membership>Payment info.

Your VIN membership and online access charges are likely tax deductible (check with your tax professional).

Hopefully this will make tax season a little easier for you. We've tried to make the statement more clear (we used real English and filtered out unnecessary lines in your record).

Please let us know if anything doesn't seem right to you. Email feedback@vin.com or join the discussion.

Thanks for using VIN!

Calculate With Confidence!
Thanks to suggestions made by VINner, Dr. Kurt Fuller, the VIN transfusion calculator has been updated to provide a minimum donor weight for you.

You don't have to be Einstein to do these clinically useful calculations by hand, but it sure is nice to be able to check yourself (or simply get the answers faster) using the growing collection of VIN Calculators

  • Constant Rate Infusion
  • Phlebotomy
  • Transfusion
  • Energy Requirements
  • Converting to and from SI Units
  • Body Surface Area
  • Echocardiography Normals.

Let the VIN Calculators do the math for you, and save your scrap paper for doodling.

Communicating your vaccine protocol
Changing guidelines, research findings, and product choices can create a muddle of confusion. Sort through it and offer clients the best protection for their pets.

Do rolled or squared toes affect rate of breakover in horses?
Based on currently available scientific information, the assertion that shoeing with a rolled or rocker toe significantly affects breakover in the horse cannot be supported. There may be other advantages to roller or rocker toed shoes; however, currently available evidence would suggest that any effects are modest, and such evidence need independent replication.

Biochemical reference intervals and intestinal microflora of free-ranging Ricord's iguanas (Cyclura ricordii)
Seventeen bacterial isolates were obtained, including Salmonella sp. (serogroup B; serogroup D negative), Escherichia coli, Brevibacterium sp., Enterobacter cloacae, and Enterococcus durans.

Why we believe drugs work better than they often do
An interesting analysis was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. While it looked at antidepressants, there is no reason to believe that a similar pattern does not exist for ALL drugs and drug trials. What do you think?

Seizures in a pot-bellied pig
I just received an emergency call from a client with an 8 week old female pot bellied pig that he thinks might be having a seizure. The client balked at the emergency fee and doesn't want to come in at this point, but I'm concerned that he may come in eventually and I'll have no idea how to treat a seizuring baby pig.

Pets with treatable but challenging and expensive chronic problems: debate on euthanizing vs rehoming
I am treating a dog for atypical Addison's and the owners are considering euthanizing him. I discussed with the owner today that it is OK to consider placing him through pet rescue. Anything else I can say to her to help?
